Nice catch! I trust everyone here has actually seen the film. Duke gave a staggeringly awesome performance in it. A role like that of Keller is practically impossible for any actor to master without ringing a few false notes, and that's even moreso the case when it comes to a child/pre-adult actor. However, Duke absolutely nails it. Really remarkable, jaw-dropping stuff, what she and Bancroft manage to accomplish, bouncing off each other's talents.
Funny thing, though. Many years ago, the first time I noticed "The Miracle Worker" listed in the tv-schedule as coming on, I avoided it, expecting some schmaltzy, overly-sentimental Hollywoodish biopic. When I finally did get around to viewing it, I was quite floored to discover it was the total opposite of what I expected... unrelentingly stark, and at times funny, deeply disturbing, endearing, and overall quite emotionally draining. Most of all, a real work of art. |
