I won't be on the bds again til Tuesday, so I thought I'd post these early.
In the ep: 1. "The Petition", what is the petition about? 2. "Road Race": (a) how does the jalopy do in the race? AND (b) what happened to the jalopy right after the race? 3. "Rick's Riding Lesson", Rick pretends he doesn't know how to ride so he can get instructions from a pretty instructor. She, in turn, pretends she doesn't know how to ..................................... 4. the "Tuba Incident", what kind of girl does David say he likes? __________________________________________________________ 5. The Nelson clan is in the Guiness Book of Records for an unusual feat. What was it? ***Discussion Question*** The fraternities (and sororities) can always be depended to come up with some crazy scheme or gimmick. Pick one or two that are your favorites, and tell why you chose it/them. |

I know at least three of these, but I don't want to be a hog, so I'll just answer # 3. The girl who gives Rick riding lessons that he doesn't need gets guitar lessons from Rick, only to demonstrate on the hayride that she can already play guitar! BTW, that whole hayride scene, and the whole Nelson family and friends singing around the campfire, is one of my favorite scenes from the show--a great example of the gentle warmth and charm of the show.
Overall, the frat scenes aren't always my favorite; after awhile they started seeming, to me at least, sort of tired and dated (and after all, they were apparently inspired by Ozzie's years at Rutgers in the 1920s--Dave didn't go to college for long (how could he when he was working on the show all the time) and Rick never did). But I will single out two favorite episodes involving the frat--"The Fraternity Rents a Room," with all the great hijinks they come up with to drive out the professor, who ends up taking their efforts as a sign of affection, and another episode, although it has kind of a silly premise, but "Bedtime Story" where the dean asks the frat to have someone stay in bed all week, and Wally weasels out in typical fashion and leaves Rick stuck (although, again, this seems a bit preposterous since Rick is married by this point)--but it's still a funny episode, and then there's a great twist at the end where the dean realizes that the stunt that he was supposedly trying to outdo at a rival school was actually a serious study, and he wants to forget the whole thing, and Rick spent the whole week in bed for nothing! |

Question 5: Ozzie and his band, Rick Nelson, and Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (Nelson) all had at least one number one hit record. |

Q#5 is correct and #2 is 1/2 right: the hot rod and the jalopy tie in a dead heat (but the jalopy does fall apart right after)

These were the two frat eps that immediatley came to my mind too! "The Fraternity Rents a Room" is surely a classic episode of the series very likely to show up on multiple DVD sets of the show. IMO its a MUST for those who want to sample a GREAT ep of the series. But I think for sheer silliness "The Bedtime Story" is hard to beat. Orig. it was Wally who had to stay in bed for a week, but you know ol dependable Wally lol. Yes, I agree with you Matt that the Frat eps can be a wee bit cliched and corny at times - but in a wierd way that adds to the charm for me. (And so vastly more refreshing than much of the current garbage on TV passing for series) |
