Default Jaycee Dugard Gets $20 Million!

Good Gawd! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38041109

On the one hand, it's good if they start shelling out this kind of cash to the victims of KNOWN criminals who should have been kept locked up and carefully monitored if let out at all--they might start figuring it's actually worth keeping some of these psychos behind bars instead of unleashing them on an unsuspecting populace. On the other hand, I wonder if they're doing her a favor. Neither she nor her kids went to school or had any input other than the brainwashing allowed them by their abductor/captor. Can they possibly understand the value of money and won't they fall victim to every scam out there? Including maybe more kidnap--this time for ransom? Just sayin.'

Oh, I'm glad to see her get the money--it's just that there are enough lottery winner horror stories involving people who have lived relatively normal lives, it's worrisome to think about this happening to a person with such challenges.

I wish Jaycee and her family nothing but the best. Hopefully this money will be used wisely in helping them build a new life.

I'm willing to bet that her mother will make sure that she manages the money well. If I were her, I would get myself a representative to look out for my best interest financially.

True, they've been through so much, that should help them cope.

I'm with Cori on this one. That much money is just going to make an already-difficult situation even more difficult. Drop 20 million in anyone's lap and life's going to get messy (like Cori said - just look at lottery winners, not to mention pro atheletes, especially boxers). Drop 20 million in the lap of someone who is naieve and ignorant of anything outside of her little shantytown in the backyard of her pervert-abductor, and look out! More harm than good if you ask me.

True, she deserves every penny of it. I'm just not sure 2 billion pennies is going to make her recovery easier or ensure a better life.

Of course, we all know what this is about - the criminal justice system dropped the ball big time by letting a man out of prison who should never have seen the light of day, and now they feel really bad and are trying to "make up for it". It's damage control. Pathetic. And a failed attempt, I'm afraid. May even backfire. But that's the American way - just throw money at them and that should help make things all better.

Word has it the lawyers will take a huge chunk and the rest will go to the family in installments, not be dropped in their laps.

Yes, indeed. This case is very sad. The state of CA is giving her the money to try and "make up" or make it right in a situation where an innocent young girls childhood and young adult life were destroyed by some pervert and his wife. You can't make up for 19 years of torture, rape, and being held captive with money. But maybe some good can come out of it for Jaycee, she can use the money to buy herself a home and get her daughters an education and the things they need. She will need years of psychiatric treatment and counseling which I'm sure the money will help pay for. She did what she could over the years just to survive, and for that she's got a heck of alot of courage. For the hell that she has lived for the past 19 years, she deserves every dime; but more than that she deserves to see justice done and see Garrido and his wife behind bars!
