I finally got around to seeing this magnificent old movie. Always heard it was worth watching and now I'm so sorry I waited so long. IT IS WONDERFUL! I can't think of another movie offhand where the on air chemistry was so great. The dialogue is amazingly witty and ALL OF THE FILM is so incredibly remarkable considering it was made in 1934 - just 5-6 into the "talkies."
Anyone want to discuss this GREAT film? AND if you haven't seen it go and do so - it is wonderful with a capital W. (as in a 80 pt font size capital W. |

It is a good movie and legend has it that white t-shirt sales dropped dramatically because Clark Gable went shirtless. Maybe you heard that one before, it's one of the oldest Hollywood legends out there.

I had the chance to see It Happened One Night on the big screen last October. There's a movie theater near my home that shows films from the Golden Age of Hollywood every Saturday night. It's a good thing I went early because the place was packed and by showtime they were sold out. It's breathtaking and magical to see such a great movie with a few hundred people. By the way, there were more women there than men. After 76 years Glark Gable can still make the ladies week in the knees.

It is indeed a wonderful movie, and swept all the major Oscars for 1934. Too bad movies like that aren't made anymore.

Yes, what everyone says I totally agree with. I watched it 3 times before I returned it to the library. I just couldn't stop. And of the course the hitch-hiking scene is a cinema classic. (Boy she sure shows old Clark up in that one - scene that is).
I can't believe the AFI only ranks this as #46 in their list of best films ever. It really should be much higher imo. (A big PHOOEY thread on the AFI is in the works.....by yours truly) |

Plus, no way would "The Walls of Jericho" be used in a movie or TV today. It would just be all skin. That said, I did love the ending scene.
![]() P.S. Yes, Claudette did upstage Clark in the hitchhiking scene. Classic!!

Love this film, one of my all-time favorites. The chemistry between Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable was amazing!

A great film. And to think, when they were making it, Claudette Colbert thought it was the worst film she ever made, but it earned her an Oscar.

I agree with you about the chemistry between Clark and Claudette. Their on-screen presence was definitely magical. A movie that comes close to "It Happened One Night" that I think you would really enjoy is "History Is Made At Night" with Charles Boyer and Jean Arthur. Find out if your library has it and check it out and tell me what you think about it. |
