Give Me Your Theories on Adam Hecht

this case has always probably been one of the most interesting to me. i would love to get your thoughts on what you think happened with this kid. personally, i believe he was killed by the roomate. not sure what additional evidence there was supporting any theories.

I think he was killed by a "street person", but not necessarily someone who had it out for him. I think it was a chance ordeal. I also think that someone is either associated with or friends with "Tony".

I think Adam is now dead but I think there's a good chance that he left of his own will. From what they said about his sympathy for the homeless and seemingly wanting to learn more about street people not to mention being disillusioned with the good life, I can see him wanting to live like them to try and understand more about them. I think mental illness could have set in while on the streets and he may have even forgot who he was. Tony did mention to his brother something to the effect if he would just look around he might find some information. With Tony being blind I have a hard time thinking he could have disposed of a dead body in the middle of a big city where no one would find it. Adam could have definitely, while on the streets, met with some sort of foul play but I think there's a decent chance he left his family and wealthy lifestyle of his own accord.

It's hard to speculate because there really is no evidence for murder or foul play. However, my gut feeling is that he was killed by someone he encountered on the street not long after he disappeared.

I think Adam's heart was in the right place. I believe he genuinely cared about those less fortunate than him and wanted to "do his part" to solve a serious social problem. We must remember that Adam was a very young man when he disappeared, and since he grew up in an extremely affluent lifestyle I think it's reasonable to assume that he was naive to the harsh realities of life on the street.

He would have been easy prey for someone looking to take advantage of the situation; a person who would have seen Adam's good qualities as weaknesses.

EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I wonder if Tony's cryptic remarks were intended to entice Adam's brother into a similar situation where he too could be taken advantage of.

I agree with everyone else.

From what I can remember, Adam was a pretty socially conscious young man who had a genuine desire to change the world for the better. I agree that he probably became disillusioned with his own affluent lifestyle and left of his own accord.

I fear that his naivity is what ultimately got him killed. I also believe he ended up as a John Doe somewhere...

I must be in the extreme minority, but I don't for a second buy the voluntarily homeless angle. Nobody wants to be homeless. Not Adam, not anyone. It's a very difficult lifestyle. I can understand Adam wanting to help those less fortunate, but there were other more practical ways he could have done so (volunteering, donations, charity, etc) that didn't involve him sacrificing life's necessities (such as food and shelter), not to mention safety and security.

And considering everything we know about Tony, he seems to be a very sketchy and shady individual (I also don't recall anything about him being blind). I know a lot of people feel sorry for him because of him being amongst the homeless population and possibly being mentally ill, but considering everything we know about him (groping Martine, refusing to move out -even when asked -, the suspicious burns he caused Adam to get, etc) he seems to be a person that can not be trusted. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was involved in Adam's disappearance, and I think any mental illnesses he has he probably exaggerated for personal benefit. I always got the impression Tony was smarter than he let on.

I *really* don't understand why so many people give Tony a free pass, yet constantly harp on the Hechts for allegedly being snooty during their interviews. I went through that segment multiple times with a fine toothed comb and didn't find anything any of them said to be rude, irritating, inappropriate or snooty. On the contrary, I found them to be rather down-to-earth, especially when compared to some other rich people.

Pretty much agree with all of this. I tend to think it more likely than not that Adam's disappearance wasn't voluntary.

As for Tony, it's hard to say if he was directly involved. My gut feeling is that he wasn't simply because he did some pretty stupid things if guilty of harming Adam - such as hanging around the apartment, and assaulting the mother, as you mentioned. I do think it's possible (even probable) that he know more than he is telling, and that he may know what happened, and who was likely responsible, or at least have some idea of those things. As I mentioned a few years back, his comments to Adam's brother bother me. Almost like he might be trying to lure the brother to a similar fate.

As for the Hechts themselves, I've never had an issue with them. I haven't read up on this one, or seen the segment in some time, so I can't recall what the rhubarb was about. Maybe they just didn't come off well in the interview or got a bad edit? It's possible.
