Who cares? I have close to a thousand sets and I've bought them all on the internet.

I dont know why people would buy new shows as they could just DVR them as they are televised. If I liked modern shows I would buy a DVD recorder and just record them as they are aired.
Its funny as I had a VCR in the 80s and the only thing I have from that era is a Buddy Hackett Showtime special, Some Car 54 episodes and Boys Town movie recorded from the great/fun WGN station.

For a fan, it's important to have a crisp, clean copy of the shows without ads, pop-up graphics during the show and the network logo superimposed over the image.

And for shows that aren't new, the syndicated reruns chop out bits of the original telecasts to put in more ads, so it's almost essential if you're a true fan of a particular show.

This is irritating me when I watch The Nanny on Nick at Nite and TV Land. They only seem to show a handful of episodes and the episodes they do show are monopolized by commercials. In that time during the late night, I can switch over to Cartoon Network and complete a whole episode of Robot Chicken on Adult Swim before Nanny comes back from commercial!
