Question Should Rookie Phenom Stephen Strasburg Be An All Star After Only A Couple of Games?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/player...playerId=30373

Granted, He Has Only 3 Major league starts to his young resume, but he is everything he has been advertised to be....DOMINANT! Should he be an all star though? Thoughts?

Cool

No he shouldn't. There are plenty of players in the majors who have played for years and never seen an all-star game. Why should this guy jump the que? Besides a handful of games is far to few to judge if this guy deserves to be an all-star. What if he turns out be a one year wonder? Let him prove himself over a longer period of time before giving him an all star nod.

There's no legitimate reason why he shouldn't at least be on the ballot. If he is elected then he won't be the first nor the last player to make the all star team in their rookie season.

That is all true Charles, but Strasburg hasn't even played the whole year. He just pitched three games thus far.

You're right and I'm sure that the pitchers on that list all had more than 3 games under their belt in their first years. I look at it like this, you're gonna have one group that will scream bloody murder if he is elected and another that will do the same if his name isn't on the ballot. I'm pulling for the AL so I'm kinda hoping he doesn't get elected.

I have to agree with Brian on this one. Only three starts isn't enough to constitute being an All-Star, IMHO.

I wouldn't object either way. I actually don't think he should be, but if every team has to have at least one representative... do they still have that rule for the all star game?

The thing about Strasburg is that while it's true he's only had 3 starts in the majors, it's also true that he was prevented from starting earlier by factors that were beyond his control. He was ready for the majors on opening day, but the team chose not to bring him up until later.

But, with only 3 starts under his belt to this point, I'm fine with having him wait a year.

Looking back on that list, there sure HAVE been a lot of rookie all stars over the years. The NL list has 5 Hall of Famers (Ashburn, Bench, Carter, Frank Robinson and Tom Seaver), plus a couple of other guys (Piazza and Pujols) who will definitely be in there. Tim Raines' career was also of HOF quality, and he's easily be in there already were it not for Rickey Henderson.

The AL list has only 3 HOFers (Fisk, Dimaggio and Carew). Mark McGwire was on his way to the HOF but messed up. Tony Oliva was very close to HOF quality, it would not have been a mistake to admit him. Ichiro will easily make the HOF whenever he becomes eligible.

Ichiro and Matsui were indeed "rookies" but not in the same sense. They were already well-established stars in Japan before coming to the majors.

I understand fully the desire to rush Strasburg to the All Star game. But it won't kill us to have him wait until next year. I'm thinking that even he would probably agree with that. Besides, unless he was selected as the starter, he'd probably pitch no more than one inning anyway.

I can wait.

Looks like it's official and he will not be selected for the team this year.

One other thing I thought of about this subject was this: since the all star game now has "meaning" (in the form of home field advantage in the World Series), then imo, if a manager thinks that a particular guy will help you win the game, then yeah, go ahead and pick him.

Most AL players would not have hit against Strasburg, so who's to say he couldn't come in for one inning and maybe strike out the side? If something like that can help you win the game, then yeah, put him out there.

All that's moot now, since he won't be going.

Every year we get arguments from sportswriters and sportscasters over who should be there but isn't, and who's there but shouldn't be.... it's crazy.

I remember one year when Robin Yount was asked who should pick the all star team, the players or the fans (there's always controversy that the fans don't know what they're talking about)... he said "I can't really answer that question because I don't know who the game is supposed to be for. I don't know if the purpose of the game is to honor the players who are having good years, or whether the purpose is to put the teams on the field that the fans want to see". Makes perfect sense. It depends on what you think the purpose of the game is.

I'm all for fans selecting the teams (I agree with the mangers and coaches selecting the pitching staffs however).

One year, Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove as the best defensive first baseman in the AL (1999). Turns out, he only played 28 games at first base that year, and DH'd in the other 135 games in which he played. That's when I gave up on thinking that managers and coaches always know what's going on (Gold Glove awards are selected by the managers and coaches of each league).
