Clay Aiken has reportedly said that he would be interested in joining the American Idol judging panel.

The singer - who finished runner-up on the show's second season - told Billboard that he thinks a former contestant would be a good replacement for departed judge Simon Cowell.

"I've always thought it would be a great addition to the panel to have someone who's a former contestant and knows what it's like to be up on that stage and be critiqued," he is quoted as saying.

However, he went on to say that he is "so far removed from it at this point that I don't know if I remember what it's like, but who knows".

He added: "I would not put myself out there to be as caustic as [Cowell] is, but if they want to call me, bring it on. We can talk."

Fox previously said that it will announce who will join Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres on the judging panel this summer. Auditions for the tenth season of the competition begin July 17 in Nashville.
