Nurse in iconic "Times Square Kiss" photo dies LOS ANGELES, CA The nurse known around the world for a kiss in New York's Times Square at the end of World War II has died. You may not recognize the name Edith Shain, but, you'll recognize her in the iconic life magazine photo taken on August 14, 1945. She passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday. Edith was in San Jose in February, lobbying for a national holiday celebrating the "greatest generation." Shain is survived by two sons, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was 92 years old. A sailor and a nurse kiss passionately in Manhattan's Times Square, as New York City celebrates the end of World War II, on August 14, 1945. The celebration followed the official announcement that Japan had accepted the terms of Potsdam and surrendered. (AP Photo/Victor Jorgensen) |

More and more of our cultural touchstones from that time are passing away. It pains me because I worry that the message of that time and the greatness of the people are being forgotten by future generations. |
