Cool Before He Was Famous: Don Knotts in the soap Search For Tomorrow!!

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x44...ing-don-kn_ads

I don't know the exact year this aired, but I have a couple of soap books that say that Don was a cast member of SFT from 1953-55. Enjoy!!!!

Cool

I had no idea that Don Knotts was on a soap early in his career. He sure looked young in that clip!

Thumbs up

SFT was Don's first major television role. I read in some soap magazine a few years ago that SFT lead Mary Stuart (who was on the show for its entire 35 year run - 1951-1986) thought that Don Knotts didn't have what it took to make it big in show business. She was clear that she found him a very nice guy, but didn't think acting was his niche. Alas, he proved her wrong and the rest is history!!

I do remember Don commenting a few years ago about his role on SFT. He didn't really like it and he said that was the only part he ever played that wasn't comedic. I think maybe Don was out of his element on the show and that's why Mary thought he wouldn't make it in show business. He seemed to be a real shy guy when he was away from the camera too. But boy when the camera was on he was a legend. I loved him in everything I ever saw him in.

It's a shame Don Knotts left the Andy Griffith Show before the end of the run. Mayberry was never the same without Barney Fife!

True - but it is fun seeing Don acting in a completely different type of role. Even though he is so young in this time period, there is no mistaking that that is Don. You could recognize him in an instant!!

No it really wasn't. I wish Youtube would have some clips of Don Knotts' variety show that he hosted in 1970-71. That is one show I do not remember.

I never even knew that Don Knotts had his own variety show. Plus, I agree that The Andy Griffith Show was never the same without Barney Fife.

Gary Burghoff of MASH was a regular on it.

I think he did that show after his string of movies was over and before he moved over to Disney. I loved the Apple Dumpling Gang movies he made with Tim Conway.

Don Knotts actually said in Chris Mann's Three's Company book that middle-aged men all over America would write him asking for fashion tips. Gotta love it.
