Music TVSquad Talks To "AI's" Katie Stevens on Prepping for "Idol" Tour and College

Katie Stevens on Prepping for the "American Idol" Tour and College
by Andrew Scott
posted Jun 16th 2010

Katie Stevens wowed the judges during the early rounds of "American Idol" season 9, and after Hollywood Week, Kara DioGuardi was ready to peg her as the "potential winner."

Unfortunately for Katie, things didn't quite work out as Kara predicted; she was eliminated during the Top 9 reboot, alongside Andrew Garcia.

Still, Katie made a lasting impression on America, with solid performances of songs like 'Chasing Pavements' and the Beatles' 'Let it Be,' and by the end of her run, the 17-year-old proved that age really is just a number.

Last week, Katie spoke to TV Squad about her preparations for the 'Idols Live' tour, whether her grandma will attend the show and her plans for college.

So now that "Idol" is over, are you the most popular girl in school?

[Laughs] I don't know. I mean, I still keep in touch with my friends, and they still treat me the exact same as they did before I was on "Idol", so I don't know.

I don't think I've increased in popularity. [Laughs]

I know that you're busy prepping for the tour, but do you at least have time to relax?

Yes. I mean, we get to hang by the pool, and we're all starting to write music, and lyrics and things like that.

And actually, the day that my school had their prom, we had an "Idol" pool party for me, since I was missing prom.

Are you still finishing your degree?

I actually just finished two days ago...
So I'm done with school, and I'm going to be getting my diploma.

Are you planning to take the college route as well?

I actually had applied to college before I did "Idol", so that in case nothing worked out, I would have a back-up plan.

I deferred from Marist College until second semester, so we'll see. I mean, depending on what happens -- hopefully I'll get signed, and I'll put off college for a little while.

But I definitely want to do college at some point in the future to get a degree.

You were eliminated before country week, which was a genre that Simon incessantly wanted you to pursue.

Had you survived, which Shania Twain song would you have performed?

I probably would have sung 'From This Moment On,' because it actually showed a clip of when I was little. I sang that for my uncle's wedding, and it's a song that I've loved for a really long time...

So definitely... I probably would have sang that.

Do you have any initial plans to start recording an album?

Well, for now, I'm focused on the tour, but I'm still gonna be writing and preparing so that I'll have a lot of material ready when I get off the tour.

What's your set going to look like?

I have it all planned out. It's gonna be amazing, that'll be my tease.

It'll be amazing. [Laughs] ... I like the element of surprise, so I'll let you be surprised. Just know that it's gonna be amazing.

Do you know if your grandma will be able to attend any part of the show?

I'm hoping. I mean, since she's sick, I think that the amount of people and the screaming and everything would be a little too much for her.

But I'd definitely like her to come to a dress rehearsal or something when it hits Connecticut, so hopefully she'll be able to do that.

Which former "Idol" were you most excited to meet at the finale?

I was excited to meet all of them. When we were backstage waiting to go on, we were actually waiting back there with Fantasia, and Carrie, and Ruben and Kelly.

I love all of them, and it was cool, because I had watched them [when they were on the show]. So to be able to meet them and talk with them was really awesome.

And I love Jordin Sparks, so I think I was most excited to meet her, just because she won at such a young age, so she was kind of one of my inspirations to go out and audition this year.

Is there one "Idol" that you'd like to collaborate with?

It would be cool to collaborate with Jordin, I think.

Was there one person from this season that you bonded with the most?

Well, I was very close with Lacey Brown. She was one of my best friends on the show, and we spent a lot of time together.

So it's sad that she can't be on tour with me, but I know she's gonna do very well in her career regardless.

Do you keep in touch with her?

Oh, I do all the time. I text her all the time, and call her and video chat with her.
So, I'm definitely always gonna stay in touch with her.
