The first number one song by a British performer was Acker Bilk with "Stranger On The Shore" in the summer of 1962.

Looks like you're right, The Tornados were the first British band to hit #1 on the U.S. charts

Being a huge Joe Meek fan, I own this on vinyl. And according to Wiki, it is the first British single to have hit number on the US charts.
