Didn't realize this, but in the above article from 1981, CBS wanted Jean Stapleton back. Since Edith was dead, they wanted her to return as her younger sister...Oy Vey! |

Actually, that would have been an interesing concept but for the sake of viewers and the influence of Edith on the 10 year screen, it was best they kept things the way they were.

That's incredible that they'd even consider such a hamfisted move. It's obvious the networks execs didn't give a damn about the characters at that point and were just scrambling to milk the cash cow.
Meh. As far as I'm concerned, AITF ended with Mike and Gloria moving to CA, where they ended up living happily ever after. Mike is now nearing retirement, Gloria has turned over her small cosmetics business to her daughter, Edith, (hey I can dream, right?), and Archie and Edith are still at 704 Hauser Street, in their mid eighties, taking care of each other, with an occasional helping hand from Joey, who bought the house next to them and renovated Archie's bar into an Internet bar, which frustrates Archie but keeps the biz in the family. Mike and Gloria are seriously considering renting the house from Joey as his business takes him out of town for long periods, and that will allow them to be closer to the in-laws and help take care of them in their golden years. Happy ending for all. The end.
