Default Another Rick Nelson CD box set from Bear Family

Since I know that a lot of folks in this forum are fans of Rick's music, here's a link for the next Bear Family box set of Rick Nelson CDs. The first was The American Dream, 1957-1962, the second was For You: The Decca Years, 1963-1969, and the new one coming out this summer is called The Last Time Around, 1970-1982. For us diehard Rick fans, the only bad news here is that they stopped in 1982--not only did Rick make some excellent live recordings and a great final single for MCA in 1985 ("You Know What I Mean"), which granted have long since been available on CDs, but they unfortunately made no effort to include any of Rick's unreleased final recordings from 1985. Still, for fans of Rick's music, these Bear Family sets are great, albeit pricey. I'll have to start setting aside a fund to be able to buy it later this year, but it will be worth it.

Bear Family is quite the label and is known for putting out massive boxed sets. That said they are still a great reissue label worth checking out if you are into music from the 1950's and 60's.

Isn't this boxed set supposed to include "The Memphis Sessions"?

And how much is "157,36 €" ?

Yes, it does include the original Memphis Sessions album, the way that Rick intended it, not the way it was overdubbed and remixed after he died. I remember reading somewhere where Kent McCord recalled how Rick played the Memphis album (the original unreleased version) for him after Rick finished recording it in 1979; Kent said that Rick was really proud of the album and that it should be released the way Rick intended it to be. And now finally it is.

As for the price, I bought the first two Bear Family box sets on Rick from Collectors' Choice Music for about $160 each. Not cheap--in each case that was practically my CD budget for the whole year lol--but well worth it. They have rarities, previously unreleased material, great sound quality, and great books loaded with information about Rick and his career and loads of photos--many taken by Ozzie's brother Don.

Me too! I just wish that Rick were alive today to see his recordings get the care and respect that Bear Family puts into its box sets, and for that matter to have contributed new interviews to the essays in the books in these sets. Fortunately, though, the writer of those essays, long-time L.A. music writer Todd Everett, did interview Rick a number of times over the course of the 1970s and 1980s, so at least he draws upon those interviews with Rick.

The Bear Family also released "Gene Vincent - The Road is Rocky: Complete Studio Masters 1956 - 1971" (8 CDs) and it is remarkable! It took me 3 months just to listen to every song on it. The hard cover book included is better than any "biogaphy", plus great photos included. They also released a boxed set of Eddie Cochran's music but I don't have that one yet.

The Bear Family obviously knows and appreciates the quality artists!

Agreed! I want to get some of their sets on Rick's friend and songwriter Johnny Burnette too!

And on a more strictly O&H note, one of the things I loved about Bear Family's set on Ricky's 1957-62 recordings was the inclusion of recordings that were made for the TV show but never released on record (or CD, whatever!) before, especially his duet w/ Lorrie Collins of "Just Because." I also liked Ozzie and Harriet's recording of that song, which was on an episode ("Cruise for Harriet" I think) and on their LP for Imperial Records--I wish Bear Family or somebody would reissue that! Ozzie and Harriet weren't the greatest singers (well, Harriet was pretty darn good actually) but at any rate they sang well together and made songs sound pleasant.

Wow, I thought I had everything, but there's a few tracks on there I don't have. Gotta get this one. Most of the Epic stuff was released on a cd/cassette back in the 90's titled "Stay Young", but it'll be nice to have the remaining tracks, plus the live stuff. Awesome!

Wink

Ran across this website where you can "vote" for TV shows, musicians, celebrities, etc, and also post comments. Pretty interesting. Ricky is listed on there.
