...Shaggy wasn't supposed to be a "stoner" (even though he appears to act like one). He was created as a amalgam of Bob Denver's "Maynard G. Krebs" {"the beatnik"} from "DOBIE GILLIS", and Richard Crenna's "Walter Denton" {"the screechy one"} on "OUR MISS BROOKS"...just offbeat and "goofy" enough to have a dog like Scooby, and function as "comedy relief" at the same time...

I loved in the first Scooby Doo movie how they made it look like Shaggy was getting stoned inside the van, but then when they go in the van he's actually barbecuing

I think Shaggy was supposed to have all the elements of a stoner, i.e. bohemian appearance (the goatee thing, the shaggy hair, the slumped shoulders), the lingo ("like WOW, Scoob!"), the appetite (no explanation needed) and personality (laidback and mellow, except when it came to ghosts) without actually BEING a stoner.

Kind of like Fonzie had all the "cool" attributes of a 50's hood but none of the nasty stuff.

Yeah, in retrospect it seems very unrealistic but when writing for kids I can see how you'd want to skew reality a bit. We're only young once, why drown kids in reality when there's plenty of time for that later on?

On topic but off a bit...this reminds me of the obscure kids' show "Monster Squad" with Fred Grandy. The premise is that Dracula, the Wolfman and the Frankenstein Monster come to life in a wax museum (never sure how they got there in the first place, since they weren't made out of wax!) and decide to do good in order to "attone for their past misbehaving".

"Misbehaving" like mass murder, desecration of graves, kidnapping...stuff like that.

Even as a kid I kind of thought that was REALLY soft pedalling their pasts!

(Still liked the show, btw).
