Movie Reviews: Marmaduke


There’s not a whole lot to say about Marmaduke, based on the classic single-panel comic.


And Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, for one, certainly realizes that, tossing off a perfunctory review in fewer than 500 words, remarking at the end:

“Enough. Why am I writing, and why are you reading, a review of a talking animal movie? Little kids may like it. It’s not offensive.”




But Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News is offended, remarking that the film “will likely make you drool from boredom.”

It all amounts to, he says, “a talking-animal movie that isn’t worthy of cleaning Babe’s pigpen.”

But that may be an adult’s reaction.





“Bottom line, will the kids like it?” asks Nancy Churnin in the Dallas Morning News. “Quite possibly. The film is packed with adorable dogs and kids. … As for parents? It could be a great opportunity for a snooze, if you bring a little alarm that will ring in your earphones when the movie ends.”



Well, it may not be quite that bad, says Kyle Smith in the New York Post, who compares it with Sex and the City 2.

After all, he observes, it “features well-coifed bitches in heat, nonstop puns and its very own Mr. Big. Unlike SATC2 this one is harmless and, on occasion, mildly witty.”
