Thought Does Anybody Agree That 'Bosom Buddies' Was A Very Underrated Sitcom

Granted, I haven't seen this show in a few years, but I remember loving it. Tom Hanks is a true comedy gem and Peter Scolari was very underrated. Agree? Disagree?

I loved BB. When it premiered they played up the Donna Dixon "va va va voom" role because this was the day of "Jiggle TV" when you had to have a sex symbol highlighted, but it was much richer and rewarding than that. The writing was sharp, the acting likewise, and it was really quite a warm, nearly family friendly sitcom.

I agree, it was underrated!

It's been so long since I've seen it, I can't say. I'd have to watch it again to make an assessment.

But here's a question I'd like to throw out there: Would TV Land have honored the 30th anniversary of Bosom Buddies were it not for Tom Hanks' mega-success as a movie star?

I mean, whether you like the show or not, it was a show that was cancelled after only two seasons. I doubt they would have honored it if Tom Hanks hadn't had the career he did.

I loved BB. I watched it every week. The only problem I had with it was they revealed their identities too soon. Anyway, the show had a great cast and it was very underrated. I became a Tom Hanks fan instantly. I don't think TV Land would have honored the show if it wasn't for Tom Hanks though. I don't think the show would have had a syndicated life without him either. They only made about 37 episodes and not many 37 episode series get syndicated at all.

Thumbs up

I loved the show. It always made me laugh. Tom Hanks was funny and so was Peter Scolari. The actress who played Peter Scolari's girlfriend made me laugh too.

There may have been only 37 episodes but they were a gem to me.

Well, Honeymooners had only 39 episodes and that's one of the greatest classics of all-time.

Good point about TV Land and honoring the show. I completely agree.

What I really love about the show is the theme song (both of them, in that case!). I used to watch reruns very early on Saturday mornings. TBS, around 2003, would air them from 6-7am.

Peter became a pretty big star, too.

Yes, but The Honeymooners wasn't cancelled. It was Jackie Gleason's decision to end it after one season because he felt they'd run out of gas.

How many stars today would do such a thing...?

Speaking of Jackie Gleason, he starred with Tom Hanks in Nothing in Common, in 1986, and recognized Hanks potential. He said, that kid is going places. Obviously, ABC had no idea they had a future mega star on their hands!

And if anyone could recognize talent, it was "The Great One."

I imagine Tom Hanks must've been in heaven getting to be in a movie with the great Jackie Gleason.

I would have loved for the show to go on for one more season. It would have been great.
