DA reopens case of 1st missing child on milk carton who disappeared in 1979

NEW YORK (AP) — The Manhattan district attorney's office is reopening the decades-old case of a missing 6-year-old boy whose photo was the first to be put on a milk carton.

Etan Patz (AY'-tahn payts) vanished May 25, 1979. He was last seen walking two blocks from his lower Manhattan home to a bus stop for the ride to school.

Etan was the subject of one of the most extensive missing-child searches ever. He was never found but was officially declared dead in 2001.

An imprisoned child molester was declared the prime suspect. He refused to answer questions about the case. No one has ever been charged.

The office of District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said Wednesday it is looking into the case, making good on a campaign promise.

Sad thing is is that this poor kid is probably long dead.

I saw an interview with his parents last year on the 30th anniversary of his disappearance. They have been through so much. They both said they know in their hearts that he is dead, but it is painful not knowing what happened or why. I cannot imagine never actually knowing for certain what happened to your child after all this time. This is so sad.

I can't even begin to imagine what these people have gone through for the last thirty years living with uncertainty about their son's fate. That's why I hope they finally get some closure now that the case has been re-opened.
