Angry Not Fare! Cabbie Stiffed After 500-Mile Trip to Lorain, OH

http://www.fox8.com/news/wjw-news-lo...,3304843.story

LORAIN, Ohio - A cab driver called police after a couple he drove from Tennessee to northeast Ohio bailed without paying the $1,427 fare, Fox 8 News reports.

Alan Coffey, a driver for Affordable Taxi Service, filed a formal complaint with the Lorain Police Department late Monday night. According to the official report, Coffey told authorities that he drove a man and woman from Jackson, Tenn., to Lorain -- a 10-hour trip of more than 500 miles -- after the couple agreed to pay the quoted fare of $1,427.

The couple even signed a billing statement.

Coffey, 26, of Jackson, Tenn., says the woman claimed she had a family emergency.

The cabbie was waiting for the couple to pay when they grabbed their belongings and jumped into a minivan before taking off.

Authorities talked to a woman who lives at the residence where the couple initially requested to be taken. That woman indicated that the girl involved was her niece, but she showed up out of the blue and she has no way of contacting her.

Police say there are no known suspects at this time. No charges have been filed.

Me too! When I used to work at a gas station I got to know quite a few Cab drivers and I know that they don't make a lot of money. So they truly can't afford to be stiffed on a large fare like this.

Very true!! Lock them in the dispatcher's cage with Louie for as long as it takes for them to pay off the debt. Just get Jeff out of there because he doesn't deserve to be punished that way!

Me too! But they did have a large ensemble cast on Taxi and it would be tough for the writers to write stories for all of them I suppose. It would of been nice though if they could have written more for Jeff. Especially his relationship with Louie. It would have been fun if the writers could have explored that.

Especially since Andy Kaufman had it put into his contract that he would only appear in 7 out of every 13 episodes. They could've done more with Jeff in the non-Latka episodes.
