CLEVELAND - Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced in a Monday morning news release that head coach Mike Brown has been "relieved of his duties."

"I have truly enjoyed working with Mike Brown," Ferry said. "Mike has played a huge role in turning around the Cavs organization.

"Over the past five years, Mike established a work ethic, defensive identity and culture of winning that was not here previously."

The firing was first announced by ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher, who reported that the ax fell on Sunday in advance of a midnight deadline that if missed would have entitled Brown to his full $4.5 million salary for next season.

Brown was hired as the 17th coach in franchise history on June 2, 2005. In five seasons with the Cavs, he compiled a record of 272-138 (.663). Brown was named the 2009 NBA Coach of the Year by members of the media.

"Mike Brown is a class act," Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said. "On behalf of the entire Cavaliers organization, there is only gratitude and appreciation for Mike's accomplishments over the past five years.

"I think it is clear that Mike Brown has been instrumental in contributing to the growth and progress we have experienced in recent years. We wish Mike and his family the best of luck in any future challenges that Mike chooses to accept going forward.

"After a long and deep analysis of all of the factors that led to the disappointing early ends to our playoff runs over the past two seasons, we concluded that it was time for the Cavaliers to move in a different direction.

"The expectations of this organization are very high and, although change always carries an element of risk, there are times when that risk must be taken in an attempt to break through to new, higher levels of accomplishment. This is one of those times."

Brown guided the team to at least the second round of the postseason in each of his five seasons, including Cleveland's first trip to the NBA Finals in 2007. He compiled a postseason record with the Cavs of 42-29 (.592).

However, this past season ended in disappointment when the Cavs were easily defeated by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

After the ouster, Gilbert said the entire organization would be evaluated. He confirmed that Brown would be part of the "evaluation process" and would not say if Brown would return next year.

"Every single piece of this organization will be looked at," Gilbert said at that time.

The team's owner also noted that future decisions were "not about the money." Instead, Gilbert talked about the fans having their hopes diminished by the loss.

"This is about the kids waking up in northeast Ohio disappointed," Gilbert said.

Of course, the franchise also faces an uncertain future with its star player, LeBron James. The Akron native can opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

I certainly hope this isn't a ploy to try to convince LeBron to stay. (How popular is he in Cleveland compared to Steve Bartman in Chicago?) Personally I'd like to see the Cavs fold because the owner spent so much money last year to pass Issue 3 (legalizing four casinos in Ohio).

Just last year, Mike Brown won the NBA's Coach of the Year. Gee, one year you're toast of the town and the next you're just toast.

I think it's a mixture of both LeBron's pull and a scapegoat for the disaster against the Celtics. But I wish Mike Brown the best in the next chapter of his career - he is a class act and deserved better treatment.

I said earlier...The Cavs will move to Seattle and call themselves The Supersonics if they lose LeBron.

Fired by Cleveland after winning 127 regular-season games the past two seasons but not an NBA title, Brown called his five years with the Cavaliers an "exceptional experience."

Brown, who had not publicly commented since his dismissal, issued a statement through the Cavs on Wednesday in which he thanked his team, general manager Danny Ferry and owner Dan Gilbert for the opportunity to coach in Cleveland. The 40-year-old Brown was fired in the aftermath of a second-round playoff collapse to Boston.

"The past 5 years have been an exceptional experience," Brown said. "I have been very fortunate to lead a group of men who I respect and thoroughly enjoyed coaching on a daily basis. At the same time, I was able to work alongside a terrific coaching staff and with Danny Ferry and a basketball operations team, all of whom I have a profound respect for.

"We partnered in creating a culture and a standard that I am, and will continue to be, very proud of. None of which would be possible without the dedication and support of Dan Gilbert. I am thankful for the opportunity that he gave to me and my family. We have a deep appreciation for Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Cavaliers organization, and the people in this community, and have enjoyed making this our home."

Brown was selected NBA coach of the year in 2009. He took Cleveland to its only NBA finals appearance in 2007 and to the postseason every year. However, despite having the league's best record for the second straight season and two-time MVP LeBron James, the Cavs flamed out against the Celtics. Boston overcame a 2-1 deficit and won the final three games to take the best-of-seven series.

Cleveland lost its last two home games by a combined 50 points, including a 32-point drubbing in Game 5. It may have been the final home game for James, who is eligible for free agency in July and is expected to consider offers from other teams.

James was openly critical of Brown's strategies during the playoffs and did not offer his support for Brown after the coach was fired.

Brown, who previously worked as an assistant in Washington, San Antonio and Indiana, could end up with one of the five other teams with head coaching vacancies.

Other recent Coach-of-the-Year winners:

2009 - Mike Brown - fired this week by Cavs
2008 - Byron Scott - fired after a 3-6 start this season
2007 - Sam Mitchell - fired after an 8-9 start in the 2009 season
2006 - Avery Johnson - fired after a 51-31 season in Dallas in 2008
2005 - Mike D'Antoni (Phoenix) - now coaching the Knicks. He was asked by Steve Kerr to remain with the Suns, but was given permission to speak with other teams. He chose, of all places, to go to the Knicks.

Scott Brooks of Oklahoma City won the award for this season. We'll see how long he lasts there. They will expect a lot after winning 50 games this past season.

Other than Brooks (this year's winner), you have to go back five years to find a coach of the year winner who's still coaching in the NBA.

I'm sure that Brown was told by the Cavs that, after last season's disappointing end, he has exactly one year to either get the Cavs back to the finals, or win it all. He wasn't able to do either one this time.

There's a big difference between the regular season (when you can just blow through town and have Lebron dominate for one game and it's on to the next opponent) and winning a best of seven series, in which your opponent has plenty of chances to adjust to what you're doing. The Celtics were a buzz saw when the Cavs ran into them, and they never had a chance.

While it's true that someone else will come in and be able to pick up from what Brown built there in Cleveland, it is also true that Brown himself took over for Paul Silas, who was perhaps let go prematurely as well... or at least he was let go before he had a chance to show what he could do with Lebron (he had Lebron only as a rookie)

Mangini, who kept his job following a 5-11 record in his first season with the Browns, has empathy for Brown, the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach fired earlier this week despite winning more than 140 games the past two seasons and leading his team to the NBA playoffs five straight years.

"I like Mike Brown," Mangini said Thursday in a break from the Browns' organized team activities. "I sent him a text the other day. I can relate to things he's going through. It's difficult. I hope things work out for him, I hope things work out for the Cavs as well. I like (general manager) Danny Ferry a lot. This sometimes happens, you just ideally want to see everybody move forward in a positive way."

Brown will likely land another head coaching job with one of the other five teams with vacancies. The Cavs fired him late Sunday before a deadline that would have forced the team to pay him his entire salary for next season. Instead, he'll get $2 million.

Brown has maintained a low profile since being let go. On Wednesday, he issued a statement through the Cavs in which he thanked the organization and owner Dan Gilbert — the man who fired him — for the opportunity to coach in Cleveland. He did not offer any clues about his plans.

Mangini was fired after three seasons with the New York Jets. He nearly lost his job with the Browns, but was brought back by new president Mike Holmgren, who feels any coach deserves more than one season to turn a team around.

And, as Mangini has learned, it's not easy to coach in Cleveland, a city that hasn't celebrated a sports championship since the Browns won it all in 1964.

Mangini was asked if it was tougher to coach in Cleveland because of the title drought.

"Tougher to coach in this town?" he said, pausing before smiling. "It's a passionate town. You get it though. You understand and you appreciate it. Believe me, you're consumed with trying to achieve what we all want to achieve; it would be amazing and fantastic and deserved."

The intricacies of some of these professional sports contracts is amazing.

They fired him just before that midnight deadline. Can't you just picture some guy in accounting sitting at his desk when all of a sudden his Outlook calendar pops up a reminder that he probably typed in there about 3 years ago... "REMINDER: LET OWNER KNOW THAT IF COACH BROWN ISN'T FIRED BY THIS SUNDAY, WE HAVE TO PAY HIM FOR NEXT SEASON. " And he'd be saying "uh oh, I'd better get a hold of Mr. Gilbert!"

I'm sure Brown was aware of that clause. Wonder if these guys say to their families "if anyone from the office calls today, tell them I"m not home and you think my cell phone went dead... dang, if I can just make it past midnight... "

Every time I hear about these midnight deadlines in contracts, I think back to Larry Bird.

Bird retired from the Celtics after the '92 Summer Olympics. He was under a contract which allowed him to retire, but if he didn't announce his retirement prior to some date in August of 1992, the Celtics would have to pay him $2 mil or $3 mil for the next season.

Bird goes into the Garden to talk to Red Auerbach, and tells Red that he's decided to retire. Red said to him "Are you sure you want to do this? Why don't you think about it for a couple of weeks and get back to me then?". Auerbach knew that Bird had made up his mind about retiring. He also knew about the August deadline and he WANTED to pay Bird the extra couple of million just as a "thank you" for all that Bird had done for the franchise.

Bird look at Red and said "come on, Red, I know what you're doing, and I'm not going to take the money". Bird was obviously also aware of that clause. But his integrity wouldn't allow him to take something he felt he hadn't earned.

It's certainly more than a full time job to keep up with the details of so many contracted employees. Contracts sure ain't what they used to be!

LOL@MrCleveland saying he wishes Cleveland never existed hahahahahaha. I don't feel bad for Mike Brown getting fired because he's a terrible coach. Yeah he got Cleveland to the finals and he got them to win their division 2 years in a row but it doesn't mean anything if you don't win a championship. The bottom line is winning the championship and he had a long enough time to get Cleveland to the finals and he couldn't do it. Plus i didn't like the way he didn't play certain players in the playoffs. For example this season, he didn't play JJ Hickson and Daniel Gibson that much in the playoffs. Jamario Moon didn't play that much either in the playoffs. He should've also used Sebastian Telfair in the playoffs because Maurice Williams wasn't getting the job done this season. Maurice can't defend, he doesn't get a lot of assists and he shoots too many jumpshots. He did the same crap to Joe Smith and Damon Jones in the playoffs when they were with Cleveland. So i have no sympathy for him getting fired. Hopefully Danny Ferry will hire a coach who has head coaching experience and will play the athletes that can get the job done. Danny Ferry needs to get rid of Shaq and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Leon Powe can go too. Maybe Maurice Williams should also leave.

1) Plenty of coaches have long careers without winning a championship. I heard that George Karl is a great coach. I don't remember him winning anything. Hubie Brown. Great coach. Never won anything. Everyone was after Doug Collins. He never won anything either.

2) If they need to get rid of Shaq, Ilgauskas, Powe and Mo Williams, then maybe they didn't really have a championship caliber team to begin with.

3) Sebastian Telfair is ridiculously overrated. He doesn't know how to play basketball. And you're acting like he's the missing ingredient there. Ridiculous. What does ANYONE see in the guy? I don't care how good everyone thought he was in high school... oooo, they even did a book about him.. the Sebastian Telfair story. What story? He sucks. The Cavs are now the 5th team (after Portland, Boston, Minnesota and the Clippers) to find out that the guy can't play basketball. Five teams in six seasons...and counting.

You do have a point about there have been several NBA coaches in the past and present that have never won a championship. A lot of general managers and owners are very impatient with head coaches now. That's just the way it is because so many teams wanna win a championship. It's not only happening with basketball with head coaches being fired quick. It's happening in the NFL too. LOL@what you said about Sebastian Telfair hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. He has been with several teams and he hasn't lasted long with them. Cleveland will probably get rid of him sooner than later LOL. Isn't it funny that he's still in the league and his cousin Stephon Marbury is outta the NBA? LOL. Stephon i heard is playing overseas now.

However, despite having the league's best record for the second straight season and two-time MVP LeBron James, the Cavs flamed out against the Celtics. Boston overcame a 2-1 deficit and won the final three games to take the best-of-seven series. Cleveland lost its last two home games by a combined 50 points, including a 32-point drubbing in Game 5. It may have been the final home game for James, who is eligible for free agency in July and is expected to consider offers from other teams. James was openly critical of Brown's strategies during the playoffs and did not offer his support for Brown after the coach was fired. Brown, who previously worked as an assistant in Washington, San Antonio and Indiana, could end up with one of the five other teams with head coaching vacancies.

I don't feel bad for Mike Brown getting fired because he's a terrible coach. Yeah he got Cleveland to the finals and he got them to win their division 2 years in a row but it doesn't mean anything if you don't win a championship. The bottom line is winning the championship and he had a long enough time to get Cleveland to the finals and he couldn't do it. Plus i didn't like the way he didn't play certain players in the playoffs. For example this season, he didn't play JJ Hickson and Daniel Gibson that much in the playoffs. Jamario Moon didn't play that much either in the playoffs. He should've also used Sebastian Telfair in the playoffs because Maurice Williams wasn't getting the job done this season. Maurice can't defend, he doesn't get a lot of assists and he shoots too many jumpshots. He did the same crap to Joe Smith and Damon Jones in the playoffs when they were with Cleveland. So i have no sympathy for him getting fired. Hopefully Danny Ferry will hire a coach who has head coaching experience and will play the athletes that can get the job done. Danny Ferry needs to get rid of Shaq and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Leon Powe can go too. Maybe Maurice Williams should also leave.

A lot of general managers and owners are very impatient with head coaches now. That's just the way it is because so many teams wanna win a championship. It's not only happening with basketball with head coaches being fired quick. It's happening in the NFL too. LOL@what you said about Sebastian Telfair hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. He has been with several teams and he hasn't lasted long with them. Cleveland will probably get rid of him sooner than later LOL. Isn't it funny that he's still in the league and his cousin Stephon Marbury is outta the NBA? LOL. Stephon i heard is playing overseas now.
