Confused Was there A Story Line to How Or Why Chano Left the 12th Precinct?

I could've sworn I remember Chano getting shot or something along those lines.

I don't think so. I'm fairly sure he just disappeared after the second season with no explanation whatsoever.

But...I will defer to Monika on this subject, for obvious reasons.

At the end of Season 1, Chano shot and killed two robbers holding hostages at a bank. The episode dealt with him dealing with knowing that he did what he had to do, but still dealing with the guilt of taking two lives. The scene where he broke down crying in his apartment, alone, still gets to me.

At the beginning of Season 3, Chano wasn't there, and no mention about what happened to him. Danny Arnold was developing AES Hudson Street with Gregory set to be the star, after GS left Barney Miller at the end of the 1975-76 season. After many stops and starts, AES finally debuted in the spring of 1978 (in the time slot right after Barney Miller) and folded after five weeks.

Making matters worse was that during filming of the second episode, Gregory Sierra's wife committed suicide. So I tend to think that maybe low ratings wasn't the only reason the show ended after only a handful of episodes. Here's more about the situation:

Thanks for the info guys. Interesting stuff indeed. I think that episode with him killing the robbers would've been a good way to send off the character if he needed to be written off. I had no idea his wife killed herself. That is truly sad.

It is indeed. Thank God he found the strength to endure, even appearing in a play in Southern California a few months ago. I have no idea if he ever remarried or if he has children (the article I read about him regarding the recent play made no mention of either a wife or kids).

That was actually my follow up question. I'd love to know if he ever remarried and moved on after a tragedy like that.
