Newhart is also remembered for its very memorable series finale that has become, as TV Guide called it in 2005, the most unexpected moment in television history. Since it will likely take several years before we’ll see the seventh season released on DVD, here’s a clip from the famous last installment. In the earlier part of the episode, a Japanese businessman became so enamored with the town that he wanted to buy it and turns it into a giant golf course. With the exception of Dick (Newhart) and Joanna Loudon (Mary Frann), everyone sold their homes for one million dollars and left town. Five years later, Dick is frustrated by the inn constantly being pelted by golf balls and regrets turning down the offer. Unfortunately, the businessman respects Dick’s honor too much to buy from the Loudons now. Many of the town residents return to the inn for the anniversary of their good fortune and are just as crazy as ever. They’re also quite bored so they decide to take up permanent residence at the inn. It’s more than Dick can take. http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/ne...famous-finale/ |

"That's the last time I have Japanese food before bedtime!" Simply the best finale ever!

It was very clever, for sure.
For me, the MASH finale is still the king of sitcom (or in this case, "dramcom" I guess) finales.

IMO it was the greatest finale ever, well that and Mary Tyler Moore, but I think this one is a little better.

The series finale ranks amongst the best in My opinion. Very cool to see Suzanne Pleshette reprise her role as Emily Hartley in the finale. Overall it is a good show and a spectacular finale!

I think this is the best finale of a sitcom ever. I laugh every time I see it. My wife saw it for the 1st time and she asked me who is in the bed with Dick?? IT'S EMILY!!!! She didn't get the reference. I tried not to laugh. You also got to love the Darryl's speaking for the 1st time.

Out of all the finales I've seen, this one is definitely the most satisfying, creative, and entertaining, not to mention it was perfectly done all the way through. So I could easily call it my favorite finale.

I've only seen it once and that's been years ago. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again when the final season is released on DVD.

Antenna TV had a Newhart marathon a few weeks back and despite my annoyance at how the episodes were chopped up
they did air the last episode. It really is brilliant!

Yes Its one of the great finales ever. The Last Scene of the Newhart Finale(which it took place on the set of Bob Newhart's other show "The Bob Newhart Show") was very epic.
