Default Most surprising renewal/Most shocking cancellation - 2010 edition

As the networks are unveiling plans for fall 2010--what renewal has surprised you the most? what cancellation has shocked you? (this is for the current season, we are not discussing shows of all time).

I guess so far to me it has to be "One Tree Hill" renewed by The CW for Season 8.

I really had no idea this show was still popular, 8 Seasons is a long time.

Most shocking cancellation (so far) had got to be Ghost Whisperer (IF the reports are true that is.)

As of now it is official that CBS has dropped it. There is word that another network (ABC) might be picking it up.

Smallville is coming back for TENTH season. That's insanity. The show has been bad for ages and the ratings keep falling...yet they keep renewing. CW needs to shoot these shows already.

Default ABC would be most interested in moving...

..."GHOST WHISPERER" to their network [as CBS did "MEDIUM"] because they co-produce (and own) it. If they could "squeeze" another season out of it, they correctly figure they could make a little more money from another DVD "box set" and cable/syndicated repeats....

Arrow most surprising to most regrettable

Most Surprising Greenlight/Renewal/Cancellation:
  • 'Untitled Criminal Minds Spinoff' (CBS) pilot greenlight to series - I thought the backdoor pilot, aired as a regular 'Criminal Minds' episode, was severely lacking. Given the negative feedback, especially from fans of the parent series, I'm surprised that the Eye ordered it to series. They must have a re-tool fix in the works.
  • 'V' (ABC) renewal - this was a very pleasant surprise too, as the series has taken about ten episodes to finally find its stride, and is now a most intriguing scifi drama full of rewarding twists and turns.
  • 'WWE Friday Night Smackdown' (MNT) cancellation - I was shocked when I learned that it was MyNetworkTV's decision to dump their wrestling franchise, but the show was down quite significantly year-over-year, and I think SyFy will learn that there are a lot of advertisers that don't want to buy time in this series, which explains the low CPM's, which explains why The CW dumped it in the first place.

Most Regrettable Busted Pilot/Renewal/Cancellation:
  • 'Nomads' (CW) pilot rejection - word has leaked that this high-buzz pilot didn't get a pick-up, and it joins a lengthening list of intriguing missed pilot opportunities by Miss Ostroff...'Aquaman', 'Host', 'Veronica Mars: FBI Academy', 'Body Politic', 'Charmed Sons', 'Plymouth Rock'...all pilots that were probably rejected it because they couldn't pass muster with her cherished W12-34, Lifetime-Lite demographic. I can almost envision a focus group of Valley Girls scrunching their petite little noses because they simply couldn't make heads or tails of what was going on in the richly-plotted 'Nomads' yarn.
  • '90210' (CW) renewal - this series had a terrible second season in every which way, and its ratings finished pretty close to the levels of the cancelled-out-of-the-gate 'TBL: The Beautiful Life'; I don't see a rebound coming as the fickle W12-34 has largely deserted the series and gone back to MTV/VH-1.
  • 'Better Off Ted' (ABC) cancellation - had ABC shown just a bit more patience with this series, perhaps trying it out on Wednesday nights (where it did much better last season), they might have been rewarded with armloads of Emmys to go with the near universal acclaim the series was attracting, a critical-darling status so sorely lacking from ABC primetime series.

Shocking Cancellations:

The New Adventures Of Old Christine and Ghost Whisperer- CBS, both shows that get respectable numbers and decent reviews. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is also an Emmy staple, garnering Emmy nods for the network.

Shocking Renewals:

Rules Of Engagement for CBS- that show isn't very good and doesn't get very big ratings, and critics ignore it.

V on ABC- a show whose ratings have been middling to say the least and that has actually lost viewers each episode. I don't understand why they didn't cancel this.

Definitely Ghost Whisperer especially since the show consistently wins its timeslot

I think Julia will easily snag up another Emmy nomination (which would be her 5th in a row, I believe). Personally, if ABC picks up Christine, it may be just because of that. The biggest feat would be her winning - winning the year her show got cancelled would definitely be something.

I'm quite surprised CBS cancelled it. I thought for sure they'd have it waiting in the wings with 13 episodes. Right now, they'll only have 6 comedies on the schedule, and if all are to air in the fall, they won't have one veteran waiting to take over, which I think is a mistake.

Cancelling Old Christine is no surprise. It's an aging show that CBS doesn't own, with mediocre ratings in a weak timeslot. Survivor will easily double what it did. Besides it's a lousy show which didn't deserve the Emmys (and yes, I've seen a few episodes).

I think Christine will be the big syndicated hit of the fall.....it's fresh in reruns and will likely attract those who never caught it often in primetime (like moi).

Ghost Whisperer, Medium, and The Adventures Of Old Christine....What the heck is CBS thinking?????

Shocking renewal has to be 2 And A Half Men?? I don't think Charlie Sheen is worth 2 Million an episode if they cancelled this show they could keep Medium.

I'm upset about the cancellation of Cold Case! They leave the cheezy-ass CSI and CSI-Miami but cancel Cold Case. Go figure! But then again, I've been disappointed with CBS since they cancelled Touched by An Angel in 2003. Apparently, they don't hang on to a good thing when they have it.

*storms off in a huff to see what eppys of Cold Case are available through Netflix.*
