Why does Ginger have the job of giving the Skipper and Gilligan haircuts?
If Gilligan is so prone to falling asleep on any kind of nightwatch, why do they give him this extremely important job? I think Bob Denver's son did a great job for his age! What the [heck] is Maryann wearing in the dream sequence? It's amazing how the Professor can give a complete blood test! The Professor is hysterical in the dream sequence! Is there a fruit glitch here? Did citrus fruits appear in other episodes before this one--in Season 1, for example. How come the Professor never found these fruits before? Didn't he spend alot of time exploring and investigating different parts of the island? Is that really normal for Maryann not to know anything about planting these seeds and being so hopeless about it? Would a farmer (all you rural people out there) be able to wing it? After all, the Professor extends his science knowledge to areas merely connected to his practiced specialties. You would think that the Professor would come up with the seed planting idea sooner. |

This episode certainly doesn't get top marks for probability: the giant spider is more believable than some of the premises here. As you said, Im, it's very unlikely that the castaways, especially the Professor, wouldn't be aware that there were citrus fruits on the island. The Professor's not knowing that other island fruits such as pineapple and guava are rich in Vitamin C is pretty unlikely also. And thinking that they would have fruit bearing trees three weeks after planting seeds...either the crops in Kansas grow mighty fast, or Mary Ann really boobed there.
The Professor and little Patrick Denver are delightful in the dream sequence, and the Skipper is wonderfully scary. I have to say, though, that this dream sequence has its weaknesses. For one thing, although Gilligan is "Jack," he's still called Gilligan, wearing his normal clothes and living on the island in the first part of the dream. Why isn't he in a medieval village or something? And the interior of the giant's castle is nothing but a bunch of orange crates, an oversized 1960's living room chair, and the goose's throne. It looks as though they were really cutting corners on the sets for this dream sequence, and it really cheapens the whole thing. Compare the sailing ship in "Court Martial," the Prince's ballroom in "Lovey's Secret Admirer," the courtroom in "And Then There Were None" or the vampire's lair in "Up At Bat." Who went and blew the set budget? One thing about this episode that is surprisingly true, though, is the fact that nights on South Pacific islands can get quite cool, at least in winter. I was in Hawaii in March and wanted a jacket at night. |

Well, as far as episodes go, this is a different one indeed. Music is credited in some episodes to Morton Stevens but to Gerald Fried here,[see much, much, earlier posts in this forum from years back, on that topic] with Gilligan also, despite in "Smile You're On Mars Camera" much earlier in the 1965-1966 season, saying his wearing the Gilligan shirt will get him "killed" by his brother due to the latter owning the shirt, now in his dream denying the brother, but this is a dream and a casting of Gilligan. The cue when the beanstalk shoots up is clearly writtne for this one episode. I've never heard it before or since in the series.
VERY odd to have Mrs.Howell as Gilligan's widowed mother especially since Ginger is playing an even older woman-Mary Ann could have doubled as the older one [Skipper did two parts in the later "Lovey's Secret Admirer" in the "Cinderella" dream]. Fun to see Patrick Denver, aka Bob's son, in the standin role of Gilligan [which the first Gilligan historian, Joey Green, who also wrote a Partridge Family book later, dismisses as unconvincing], and Jim Backus aka Mr.Howell as a con man.[A role borrowed from Sherwood's fellow producer and fellow radio and movie actor, and voice of Linus the Lionhearted [on Sat AM at this time]Sheldon Leonard, by the way.] Excellent use of the castle shot [though coming after "Friendly Physician"] one gets castled out, as it were] and again in an eerie context with that [Leslie? Hammond?] electric organ music descending [used in two pairs earlier in "Ghost A Go-Go"] when Gilligan, in the best shot of all, walks towards it and the camera dissolves to the close up from the ariel as the laugh track fades in and Bob Denver rings the "Funeral March" and Dawn Wells opens with a squeak. And I, too, have always wondered about the fairy[?] dress. BTW Fun gag with the kiss bit on Ginger and the Professor. He's a dirty old man with Mary Ann there.] So, Professor, smart guy, citruses existed and YOU DID NOT KNOW about it, you're so smart? ![]() Fun episode. [Second Gilligan and Partridge connection, besides Joey Green, biographer, alert] This is the only episode written by a writer named Barney Slater, which seems to be the other name of the Partridge's creator Bernard Slade. Jack Arnold's got a lotta great shots. Gerald Fried's [or George Wyle's?] happy music cue at the start is fun, too, also the season finale's open music, used in the start of the episode a few titles after, "Meet the Meteor" . |

Your statement reminds me of Tina as Ginger in 1966's "Hare today" in the final [tag notwithstanding] gag: Ginger:"But Gilligan, it's MUCH too HOT for a BLANKET!" Gilligan:"Won't be for LONG.." [Emphasis the characters's, btw.] |
