Ronnie James Dio, legendary vocalist for Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and Dio, has died after a battle with stomach cancer, according to his wife, Wendy Dio. He was 67 years old. The heavy metal singer died early this morning. He was being treated at M.D. Anderson in Houston. A rumor circulated Saturday night on Twitter about Dio's death. His wife quickly shot that down: "He is not doing well, but he is not dead." His wife released a statement to blabbermouth.net today: "Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. "Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. "We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. "Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. "Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever." Dio spoke just a month ago during an awards ceremony about dealing with chemotherapy and his prognosis: "The grand wizard of classic rock" was born in New Hampshire and first burst onto the scene with the band Elf. Dio's last studio work as part of Heaven & Hell, The Devil You Know, was released in 2009. The band was scheduled to tour this summer but canceled all dates in early May. |

It has just been reported by Wendy Dio that her husband, legendary rock and metal singer Ronnie James Dio, has finally passed away this morning from his bout with stomach cancer. This tragic turn of events has occurred amid reports that he was on his long road to recovery, though his appearance on summer festival dates with Heaven & Hell, the Black Sabbath lineup from 1980-1982 featuring Dio and drummer Vinnie Appice, was cancelled due to his ongoing illness and treatment.
Ronnie James Dio was 67. His loss means the silence of one of the most distinctive voices in rock and metal, from his fronting Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the mid-70's, to singing for Black Sabbath from 1980-1982, 1992, and 2007 through the end of last year, and his own self-titled band Dio in 1983 on. He was also a capable lyricist and intriguing frontman who blessed the world of metal with the familiar, enigmatic "horns" hands gesture, used by rock and metal fans as symbol of metal fandom. God Bless You, and Rock In Peace, Ronnie James Dio.

First of all, Facebook is exploding with this news. A truly sad day in not just metal, but in music in general. Sadly, I never got to see him in concert, damn, when Heaven & Hell played in our area a few years ago, I had to work!!!
He wasn't just an amazing vocalist, but from what I hear, he was an equally amazing human being. I would hear nothing but great things about him as a person. And of course, he was the one who came up with the "devil horns" that are displayed so very often at metal shows. Actually he got it from his grandmother who used to make that sign as her way of putting a curse on people!! Posted by Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater's Facebook page: "Looks like Dime, Randy, Cliff and Bonzo just scored the ultimate singer." Amen to that, and RIP to Ronnie. My condolences to his wife, Wendy, and the Dio family. |

I first discovered Black Sabbath in 1980, with their then-new Heaven And Hell album.
I followed Ronnie from Sabbath to Dio to Heaven & Hell and discovered his work with Rainbow & Elf along the way. A true legend, a true metal master and a guy who kicked ass until the very end. Goodbye, Ronnie....you will be missed.

Unbelieveable. People are confusing Ronnie with Ozzy--"Did Ozzy DIE??"
Can't you just imagine the rumors tomorrow? They're gonna do exactly this at work on Monday. "DID OZZY DIE??"
http://www.beatweek.com/news/6087-ro...s-still-alive/ Ronnie James Dio died today. Ozzy Osbourne is still alive. May 16, 2010 Ozzy Osbourne is still alive and well. On any other day that might sound like the opening line of a joke. But we’ve seen a disturbing number of people land on Beatweek.com today after hitting search engines with queries like “Is Ozzy Osbourne dead?” and “Did Ozzy die today?” – so we want to make it clear as possible that Ozzy is alive and well. The singer who died today is Ronnie James Dio, who took Ozzy’s place in Black Sabbath after Ozzy’s departure. Not that the clarification should make fans of heavy metal any less sad, as the loss of Ronnie today is a major one. The confusion may have come from the fact that Ozzy commented on Ronnie’s passing today via Twitter, simply stating “Rest in Peace Ronnie”. There’s no attempt at whimsy or comparison in this post, or anything beyond an attempt to help set the record straight for some folks who have clearly managed to somehow hear today’s sad news – probably not helped by the fact that the news broke on a weekend. |

So sad, but I guess over 50 years of rocking is a pretty good run. Here's an early recording of him in a doo wop band.

I'm sure some of the confusion stems over the fact that many fans referred to Heaven & Hell as Black Sabbath, myself included.
I don't mean this in a bad way, but Ozzy should be dead with all the things he's done to himself (even he has said this), but Ronnie didn't abuse himself from I've read. I know he liked a pint of beer or two, but I never heard stories about drug abuse with Ronnie. He seemed to have his head on straight. I was hoping he'd beat this, but the cancellation of the Heaven & Hell tour dates earlier this month made me feel uneasy. |

Ronnie the little guy with the big voice he was a truly nice guy, he raised a lot of money through his various charities and he made a lot of great music over the years, and I don't think you'll find anyone that worked with him that has a bad thing to say about him. I went through almost all of junior high with a jeans jacket that had a giant Dio "Last in Line" back-patch on it |
