TV Update: ABC Officially Cancels "Romantically Challenged"

THIS JUST IN: ABC Cancels "Romantically Challenged"
May 13 2010
by Michael Ausiello

Amidst a flurry of renewals tonight comes word from multiple sources that ABC has axed the Alyssa Milano-headlined freshman comedy "Romantically Challenged".

Update: On Thursday 13th May 2010, @alyssa_milano said:

I just spoke to abc. They say that no decision has been made as of yet. Either @MichaelAusiello is misinformed or his "insider" spilled before proper human contact was made between the network, producers & cast. Either way it's not cool.

From the RC publicist:

"That is speculation only, nothing official regarding RC or the other shows he mentions."

This a crazy time and there is a lot of false information. How many times were Scrubs and According to Jim canceled and yet they weren't?

I just re-read Michael Ausiello's blog, even though he says "multiple sources", I'm wondering if he's jumping to conclusions on RC's cancellation. Earlier he posts that V was renewed, which as you Tweeted was confirmed by other legit entertainment news organizations. Now, all the shows he listed as being canceled are really the only shows in ABC's library still in limbo, so maybe he jumped to the conclusion that since ABC confirmed renewal for "V" but not the other shows, that must mean they are canceled, instead of still being in the "undecided" file. Does this make sense?

I don't know what he is doing, but this is the only official info (confirmed by ABC) SO FAR:

7 new series pick-ups (counting yesterday's No Ordinary Family)
and renewal of V

Everything else is not official. Ausiello is the only one reporting this RC thing, HR and Variety is not.

It’s been reported that ABC’s new sitcom, Romantically Challenged has been cancelled after just three weeks on the air. One of the show’s stars isn’t ready to go out without a fight.

Romantically Challenged follows a group of friends who, for one reason or another, have a difficult time finding love. The sitcom’s cast includes Alyssa Milano, Josh Lawson, Kelly Stables, Kyle Bornheimer, Camden Palmisano, and Sierra McCormick.

The TV show got off to an okay start with a 2.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.67 million viewers. In week two, Romantically Challenged dropped to a 2.6 in the target demo and 9.06 million viewers. Last week’s episode ratings dropped further in the demo, with a 2.4 rating, but rose in total viewers to 9.644 million.

While the show’s performance isn’t terrible, the downward trend isn’t positive. It’s also not good that the series is losing so much of the Dancing with the Stars lead-in audience.

Late yesterday, it was reported that Romantically Challenged was being cancelled after one season. Series star Milano wrote that she couldn’t believe that she’d just found out her show was cancelled via Twitter.

She later reported that she’d spoken to the network who told her that ABC hadn’t officially made a decision yet. Milano then encouraged readers to stay positive and to call the network’s opinion line (818-460-7477) to leave a message of support.

Next Monday’s episode of Romantically Challenged is the last one that ABC has on the schedule and it airs the night before ABC’s upfront presentation. If the network truly hasn’t made a decision on the sitcom’s fate, they’re likely waiting to see how well episode four performs. Either way, we should know if Romantically Challenged has been renewed or cancelled on Tuesday.

What do you think? Should Romantically Challenged get a second season or should it be cancelled?

Official: ABC Cancels "Romantically Challenged"
May 16, 2010

ABC has canceled Alyssa Milano's sitcom "Romantically Challenged" after only a few episodes.

Word of the decision leaked late last week, which sparked a furious Twitter campaign to save the show. ABC held off making it official until today.

Default These days, it's a sure sign something is wrong from the start...

...of a new series when the pilot episode is withheld, and a later episode is substituted as the first one to be telecast at virtually the last minute. This is what happened in the case of "ROMANTICALLY CHALLENGED". Then, there's another sign that a new series isn't "pulling its weight" when it's scheduled between two established shows that are quite popular with viewers- in this case, the "cushy time period" inbetween "DANCING WITH THE STARS" and "CASTLE". But did anyone notice how fast the reality series "FIND MY FAMILY" disappeared several months ago, after it was "sneak previewed" inbetween "THE BACHELOR" and "CASTLE"? When it appeared as a full-hour series, the ratings were such that ABC dropped it without a whimper from viewers. Now, it's "ROMANTICALLY CHALLENGED"'s turn...as good as the series is, network executives only care about the "bottom line"- how many viewers are watching, according to the ratings services. In this case, according to A.C. Nielsen, not enough to justify a renewal. That's the way it goes....

This show must have really had low ratings to cancel so fast. Th show wasn't even given a chance. I think it should at least be kept on all summer.
