What's the story behind Don Rickles and hockey pucks? I never was able to figure that out.

Early in his career Mr. Rickles used to respond to hecklers by calling them hockey pucks. Audiences laughed at that more than they did at his jokes so he incorporated the insults into his act. And now Don Rickles is so famous for his insult humor that many people consider it an honor to be called a hockey puck by Don Rickles!
