Three More Shows You'll Never See On DVD

Back in 2006 I did a post that highlighted the five shows you'll never, ever, ever see on DVD.

It's a tricky post to do, because so many shows are being released on DVD now, even ones you thought you'd never see ("Brisco County", "Stingray"), but I'm proud to say my picks have held up these past four years. Though I'd still love to see those show on the shiny round discs.


Here are three more. Let's see how I do in another four years.





1. "Spy Game" (1997)


A goofy but well-crafted action show that ran for about a dozen episodes on ABC in 1997. It starred Allison Smith ("Kate & Allie" and "The West Wing") and Linden Ashby ("Melrose Place" and Mortal Kombat) as a spy team battling bad guys.

It never took itself seriously and was often ridiculous, but always fun.



Sort of a lighter "Alias". It also had a lot of references to other TV spy shows. Patrick MacNee, Robert Culp, and Peter Lupus all made appearances (as did Dana Delany, Christopher Gorham, and Michael Weatherly).









2. "Something So Right" (1996-1998)


Another good sitcom that seems to have gotten lost in the haze of TV history. It wasn't massively popular (it ran for one season on NBC then went to ABC), but it's not "cult" enough to warrant a DVD release.

I truly loved this show. It had a familiar premise: two people get married and their new families have to learn to deal with each other.



But this wasn't "The Brady Bunch 2.0". It was more sarcastic and threw the exes into the mix too, and thank God the kids on the show weren't the usual precocious kids you see on sitcoms.

It starred Jere Burns ("Dear John") and Mel Harris ("thirtysomething") and was very well-written.


I think Lifetime or USA used to run repeats but now...oh well. It's not even on SlashControl or Hulu!









3. "Married to the Kellys" (2003-2004)


If this show is ever released on DVD I'll do the Macarena naked on the Golden Gate Bridge (or what I like to call "just another Friday night").


This was about a writer (Breckin Meyer) and his wife who decide to move back to her small hometown in the midwest. He clashes with her family in a lot of "big city vs. small town" scenarios, but it's all done with great humor.

It ran on ABC for one season back in 2003.



The wife? She was played by Kiele Sanchez. Good thing this show was canceled so she could go on to play Nikki on "Lost".

I really loved this show, and I'll probably never see it again. Sigh.

1. "The Fifth Corner" (1992)


This spy show was really ahead of its time. It was about a man who wakes up in a bed with a dead woman beside him. He has amnesia, and can't remember who he is, what he does for work, even what food he likes. But people are trying to kill him, and we find out he's a spy. He tries to figure out who he is while staying one step ahead of the bad guys.


It starred Alex McArthur, Kim Delaney, and James Coburn. It only lasted two episodes. The third was pre-empted by breaking news on NBC and then the show was never seen again. Which is a pity, because it was quite cool.


In this era of "Lost" and "Heroes", I can picture this serial-type mystery show catching on.

There were other episodes filmed, just never shown. If anyone out there worked on the show and has them, let me know.









2. "Breakfast Time" (1994-1996)


Oh, I loved this show. I was even on it a couple of times, but I liked it long before that. It was a live, two hour daytime show that was broadcast from a large apartment in NYC.

It was hosted by Tom Bergeron, Laurie Hibberd (aka the wife of Regis and Kelly producer Michael Gelman), and a sarcastic puppet named Bob. The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan was one of the "Road Warriors," reporters who roamed the country doing live features.


This was a very funny, outrageously entertaining show, a real antidote to everything else on in the morning. It's not the type of show they release on DVD, of course, so we'll never see it.









3. "Raven" (1992-1993)


Martial arts expert/ex-spy (Jeffrey Meek) settles in Hawaii to look for his long-lost son, with the help of ex-Navy guy Herman Jablonski (Lee Majors).

Of all the shows on this list, it's the show that has a remote possibility of coming out on DVD, because it's fairly recent and they released a CD of the soundtrack.

But I still don't think we'll see it.









4. "Private Eye" (1987-1988)


A stylish P.I. drama set in 50s L.A. It starred Michael Woods and Josh Brolin.

It was sort of the third in the period piece detective shows that NBC had. "Miami Vice" was the 80s, "Crime Story" was the 60s, and "Private Eye" was the 50s.

Really cool show. Theme song by Joe Jackson.









5. "Eyes" (2005)

I think lesser shows from the 70s and 80s would fare even worse. Who would champion their causes?

Well, the good thing about any of these shows from the last 30 years is that if you really liked them, then you taped them and have them recorded so it doesn't matter if they ever get released on DVD or not.

I used to watched Married to the Kellys with my wife when it first aired.

Our daughter was just a baby then. I kept looking for it on DVD after it was cancelled. Never really thought I would see it, but it definitely marked a time in my life.
