Hey everyone. I wanted to bring this case up because I couldn't find a thread on it after doing a search. Forgive me if it has already been discussed.
I watched it today on the "Treasures and Ghosts" DVD of the box set of UM, and it, as it has every time, brought me to tears. I LOVE this story.... To me, it is the most moving and touching of all the reunion segments. It really reminds you how important and good this show was for so many people!! To recap: Mitchell Shigemoto (Japanese-American) and James Pearson (African-American) become best friends while serving in Vietnam. Pearson acts as Mitchell's protector when several fellow soldiers harass and discriminate against Mitchell for "looking like the enemy." In a rice field, during heavy fire, Mitchell gets hit, and James shields Mitchell from oncoming bullets with his own body! Then he goes against regulations and carries Mitchell, through a flooded rice plain, to an evacuation helicopter! In other words, he saved his life!!! The reunion between those two guys, who seem so sweet is one I"ll never forget!! Anyone else particularly love this one?

I usually don't care for the lost loves cases...but the Mitchell Shigemoto case is an exception.
It was heartwarming to see those two finally meet one another. By nature the lost loves cases are the easiest to solve on UM. The inherent problem in looking for a criminal is that your looking for someone that doesn;t want to be found. |

I remember that one. God bless them. I wonder if they're still alive and are friends still?
Curious to know, how many Unsolved Mysteries cases are solved as of today? |

So a quick update on this really heartwarming case, I just found out Mr Shigemoto passed last year, may he rest in peace. I hope him and Jim continued to stay in touch for years after the segment.

I’m surprised that they never did just update shows with only solved cases. You could literally get a whole season or two worth of shows. Have a brief history of case, then update. All you need is host, old segments rebranded. Even if it’s just words on screen with update, that would bode well.
