I've heard the explanation a few times from Cindy, but I don't remember the story exactly. Most recently I heard both Cindy & Eddie explain it on a local radio station when they were here doing a play, but the podcast has since been removed. I don't remember if it was Garry or someone else from the show who used to do it as kids, but whoever it was, they thought it was a good idea to use for the theme song.

Schlemiel and schlimazel are yiddish words meaning a dolt and a failure. The whole "poem" is a nonsense poem that young children say while skipping rope or playing hopscotch. This particular nonsense poem is one Penny Marshall remembered from her childhood in the Bronx.
