Movie 'I Dream of Jeannie' Movie Is Finally Going Forward...Will Be Modernized

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movi...callaghan.html

The big screen adaptation of a popular 1960s TV show that's been talked about for years and years is "I Dream of Jeannie," but now it's looking more likely to be made, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Writers of "National Treasure," "Bend It Like Beckham," and "Mulan" have all given the series a script treatment, while Lindsay Lohan was once attached to the project as Jeannie. But, it's never gone anywhere.

"United States of Tara" writer Sheila Callaghan has been given the assignment of taking the material and making it relevant for today's audiences.

That would mean finding a way for Jeannie, a genie found in a bottle on a beach by astronaut Tony, to not be too subservient and slave-like to her 'master.'

sounds awful......jeannie did listen to her master, but isn't that the whole concept of finding a "Jeannie in a bottle"?....jeannie really loved Tony from the start but basically never listened to him and still did what she wanted, leading to chaos, the last thing we need is some wise-ass liberated Jeannie.....lol......I'll believe it when I see it anyway, it's all in the script as they say...

now lets fondly remember all the actresses at one time or another who were up for the role over the last 10 years.....

Alicia Silverstone
Some unknown blonde actress
Britney Spears
Pamela Anderson
Mandy Moore
Christina Aguilera
Jessica Simpson

so many others, next it will be Miley Cirus, oh I forgot she is busy making the Gidget movie...NOT!

Default Look, Sidney Sheldon had the right idea...

....you don't have to "modernize" Jeannie. Just follow the basic "formula" he created: ancient female genie is "accidentally" liberated by a 20th {21st} Century male, whom she falls in love with, as she tries to fulfill her ancient heritage by "serving" him. However, he really doesn't want her around because he doesn't WANT to be her "master", getting everything he could possibly want, and he can't explain her presence without appearing to be a lunatic. He wants to live his own life and have a relationship with any girl he wants because he's supposed to be a "bachelor". Jeannie, on the other hand, WANTS to "please her master", not only because she feels it's her obligation, she LOVES him, and will do anything to make him happy- whether he wants it or not. She knows what's best for him- HER...and her affection, stubbornness, jealousy and intelligence keeps her from being "subservient" towards him. It's basically "the battle of the sexes"- pure and simple.

Any deviation from this, and you'll end up with a lousy movie.

I am against modern movie remakes of classic TV shows. No matter what they do, they can never get it right. Modern movies and TV shows are garbage, now they have to get hold of the classics and butcher those too. Leave the classics alone, they cannot be duplicated.

Though I basically agree with you, there is at least one reason why to continue to remake the classics, because it usually stirs up some interest in the original series, which can lead to some TV marathons or usually a DVD release of the classic.....like maybe when they make the next planned "Charlie's Angels" movies, we might finally get season 5 released!
again I agree most remakes are awful, but there have been a few diamonds in the rough....to me, only opinion, "Bewitched" and "The Brady Bunch" movies weren't that bad, also the success of The Alvin Franchise (the two movies have made over $500 million with a third planned, I bet in 3D) has lead the studios to look into other characters like the upcoming Yogi Bear CGI movie, which Warner recently said in their forum chat they are likely to release more classic Yogi Bear on DVD to coincide.

As for TV Knowledge (a few posts up) and his comments, I couldn't agree more, as usual you wrote an incredible well thought out and educated post and I always enjoy your writings and insight.

I appreciate your kind comments, 'TeeVee' and 'treky'...unfortunately, there are few people like myself in the entertainment industry who have the same kind of insight.

They need to stop, Bewitched didn't work and neither will this one. What fools, they love wasting money.
