Why did Sam lose the bar? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I watched Cheers on and off during its original run, and lost interest after Shelley Long left. I'm not clear on why Sam lost ownership of the bar. He was the actual owner, wasn't he? If I recall correctly, he got the bar back, but how many seasons was he only an employee of the bar? Rebecca was the manager and not the owner--is that correct? I watched an episode tonight and hated seeing her boss Sam around. I loved it when Sam was in charge.

Diane left Sam and "Cheers" at the end of the fifth season. When the show came back for its sixth season, it was said that Sam had sold the bar several months earlier, and used the money to buy a boat and sail around the world. Sam turned up later in that episode and told the gang that his boat had sunk after he hit a reef. Sam got the bar back at the end of the eighth season, so he was just an employee there for almost three years.

Personally, I liked the episodes where Rebecca was in charge -- it gave the series a source of conflict (Diane was the conflict when she was there). Once Sam had the bar back and Rebecca turned into a ditz, there wasn't much conflict and the show seemed to run out of gas.

And, TVGuy, one other thing of note for JanLady (from Sam anyway) is that the bar held some bad memories for him, prompting the sale. Which might suggest a change of scenery was neccessary to help him get over the loss of Diane. Like when he tells Rebecca, "When I came in I thought I was gonna see her face everywhere". Though, he doesn't mention Diane by name.

I couldn't belive Sam, of all people, woud encourage Diane to leave. I knew she was going to because of the episode guides, but I wouldn't expect Sam to let her slip away. In the episode "Spellbound" Diane tells Sam not to let her slip away from him, but he does anyway. How stupid could he be? And Rebecca didn't take the place of Diane, and she never will. Sam will always remember her, and see her face everywhere in the bar, wether he wants to or not.

I'll admit, Sam and Diane were the couple. They did have chemistry. Well for you Diane lovers, wait 5 more seasons after that, she'll be back for the last episode.

You mean wait five more days! She's coming back to Cheers starting Monday 17 @ 12pm/11c and will be there for the rest of the week! Also, two bonus episodes on Thursday 20 when All In The Family is supposed to be on.
