LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears will wear a throwback uniform from the 1940s (pictured below) as part of a campaign honoring the “Monsters of the Midway” during select regular-season contests in 2010. The uniform will be officially unveiled during the Bears Expo Saturday at Soldier Field.
The “Monsters of the Midway” dominated the 1940s, winning four NFL titles in seven seasons (1940, 1941, 1943 and 1946). Those teams were led by Hall of Famers Danny Fortman, Sid Luckman, George McAfee, George Musso, Bronko Nagurski, Joe Stydahar and Clyde “Bulldog” Turner. This season the Bears will wear their throwback uniforms during two games which have yet to be determined. The uniforms will be a part of an overall “Monsters of the Midway” fan experience, which includes special game tickets and programs, fan giveaways and in-game highlights and ceremonies. Fans will have a chance to take photos of current players sporting the throwback uniforms at the Bears Expo. The jersey will be available for sale exclusively via the Bears ProShop store and Web site starting the morning of its gameday debut. Bears season-ticket holders will have a special chance to pre-order the jersey early next week. http://www.chicagobears.com/news/New...?story_id=6696 |

Why do NFL (and NBA) teams pretend to honor their history with these throwback jerseys? The one and only reason they bring these out is to sell them.
They certainly don't honor the old time players by the way these guys are treated by the league. Pensions? What pensions? Medical care? Ah, get it yourself! The NFL and NBA have no regard for the players who helped make these leagues what they are today. The one and only reason for throwback jerseys is to convince suckers to buy them. Would they consider giving at least a few of them away if all they're interested in is honoring the team's history? It's about the money. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But don't pretend to honor a bunch of guys that are thrown under the bus the minute they can no longer perform on the field. The NFL should be honest and admit why they're doing this. |
