"The Young and The Restless" Star Melody Thomas Scott Says the Soap Saved Her Life - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The Young and The Restless star Melody Thomas Scott says she's planning a tell-all book about her troubled upbringing, admitting she thinks she'd be dead if it wasn't for the US daytime soap.

Scott, who has played Nikki Newman for 31 years on the long-running series, is usually immensely private, but says she's decided the time is right to reveal details about her life in an autobiography.

"It's going to be very cathartic for me. Because I'm going to be talking about things that no one knows about me," Scott told AAP in Sydney on Tuesday.

"Things about my childhood that no one has known about.

"I had a lot of adversity in my life when I was child."

Now 53, Scott was raised by her grandmother, a hoarder, and says she has not spoken to her mother in 25 years.

A child actor, she made her debut in Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie at the age of eight.

By 13 she was co-starring with Clint Eastwood in The Beguiled.

Scott says her life would have ended up very differently if it hadn't been for The Young and The Restless, which she joined at the age of 23 in 1979.

"I have no idea where I would've been. Probably dead. I would probably be dead right now," Scott says.

"It was not a healthy environment and my grandmother who raised me was a compulsive hoarder.

"Had my mother raised me rather than my grandmother it's a very hard call what kind of life I would have had.

"I would probably have 17 children by now, living in a trailer. That's just my guess."

Scott decided six months ago to write the autobiography, and already has 45 pages.

She says her story is one that "needs to be told".

"Between the hoarding and being a child actor, there were a lot of very unusual aspects to my life," Scott says.

"It will help me to get the truth out and more importantly I hope it will help other people.

"I will get satisfaction out of helping other children that might be in the position that I found myself in."

Scott is married to Young And The Restless producer Edward Scott, with whom she has three daughters.

Her character on the series has had one of the enduring story themes, thanks to her relationship with Victor Newman, played by Eric Braeden.

Nikki Newman has been married 11 times, three of those to Newman.

Scott says romance has been among her favourite storylines as well as an early story when she was a cult member.

The daytime soap star says she hopes to return to Australia when the book is finally out.

I'll definitely have to pick up a copy of Melody's autobiography to read once it has been published!

Wow I certainly didnt know. Maybe its because of the hardship that makes her such a great actress.
