Back in the early 70's I lived in Buffalo New York, we were able to pick up Canadian stations. Channel 11 CHCH played bewitched around 5:30 in the afternoon during the week. It was the first and only time I've ever seen an alternative intro....now the intro was pretty much the same, the music was slightly different and Sam lays a tea kettle(not the usual frying pan) on the stove. Does anyone remember it this way? and is there a way to obtain a version of this intro.

I saw those shows on CHCH and know what you're talking about. Back then when the shows were syndicated, each station had their own separate set of prints. Sometimes these included different versions of the opening titles. The CHCH openings usually used the season 5, faster-paced music, while Channel 29 usually used the slower season 1 music. We could also get Channel 10 from Rochester and they seemed to have a mix of the two. Occasionally on CHCH you'd also see the season 2 music, which was used for the first two episodes of season 3 when originally broadcast. Anyone out there have prints of those? |

Thank you for the link. I went to "Bewitched alt. Quaker oats opening" I watched it, but for some reason I stil think there was yet another musical score for the opening. I know that when stations reprised the episodes in the 90's they must have dubbed one of these openings for the show and seemed to jump over episodes from seasons one and two. When Nickelodian played "Bewitched" in the 90's I noticed yet another version of the intro added to the black and white eps.....I'm curious though, when the show was in primetime not all these versions of the intro existed, right?

...insisted, during "their" opening titles (when they alternately sponsored the show), that the frying pan on the stove become a "tea kettle" instead, because they didn't want to give the impression that Quaker Oats or Aunt Jemima pancakes could be allowed to burn- bad for sponsor and product identification!
The musical arrangements for the opening and closing titles originally varied from season to season [however, season one's opening title music was primarily used for all network daytime and syndicated reissue prints through season five; it was easier for Screen Gems/Columbia to process the repeats that way]. The closing title music, however, was the same as the originals.

I just wish they'd put the original openings in the DVDs - but I digress.

Be thankful that this and other TV prior to the mid 70's are even showing up on DVD. |
