Default Insult or a Compliment?

I been running into a lot of people lately who haven't seen me since 2006 and the first thing out of their mouth is-"Hey you lost a lot of weight"

I'm like-"well dam was a BLIMP before?-lol That is not something you say to someone, you say it to yourself unless you are REALLY CLOSE.

So would you agree that is a inappropiate comment?

People should keep comments about what you look like to themselves. However, always better to have lost than gained in that particular department!!!

it would probably sound a lot better if they said "HEY, you are looking good!" instead, but I would take it as a compliment anyways, and try to get my own negative compliment in, try something like "your hair looks a lot less greasy now than it used to" or "I like that dress, weren't you wearing it the last time you were here?"

Put it this way - would you rather hear somebody say to you "Wow, you really got fat!!" I'd be elated if somebody told me they noticed I lost alot of weight, and I wouldn't consider it an insult at all.

yea Sol; I agree with Janice. I'm sure they don't mean it as an insult.

The way they phrased it was perhaps a little awkward, but I'm sure it was not meant as an insult.

But yeah, a better way to approach something like that would have been to say something along the lines of "wow, you look great!". THEN the two of you could go into the weight issue if that's where the conversation went.

The lady at my local video/DVD store said that recently someone asked her "when she was due", thinking she was pregnant and of course, she wasn't.

Now THAT'S insulting.
