Movie Will Smith Turns Down Marvin Gaye Movie

Will Smith has turned down the lead role in moviemaker Cameron Crowe's new Marvin Gaye biopic.

The actor spent months in negotiations to portray the legendary soul man, and now Crowe, who has been trying to get the project off the ground for four years, is without a leading man again.

But the Almost Famous director isn't rushing to find his Gaye - he's determined to hire the right man for the role.

Crowe tells Daily Variety, "It's all about getting the contact high in a movie theatre that you can get from music. A record can change your life. Somebody poured their life into that little piece of music. To me that's a hero."

I thought Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order) was supposed to take on the role. Not only does he look a lot like Marvin Gaye, he is also an accomplished singer (Rent).

Does anyone know why Will Smith turned it down? The article dosen't say. Was it because of money?

I think he would be an excellent choice. When he accepts his Oscar, he can give a special thank you to Will Smith, lol.

I got a better idea, instead of doing a feature film, just do a documentary on Marvin Gaye. There is a sh*t load of great footage floating around, and several people who knew him are still alive. Besides documentaries are better than feature films INMO.

Well, you do have a good point. Music documentaries are always a treat to watch.

I heard that Will might be doing a Bad Boys 3 which i would like to see because i liked the first 2. I've already seen a documentary about Marvin Gaye and it's very good. His daughter Nona and his 2 sons, his ex wives Anna Gordy and Janice, and his brother Frankie speak about him on there. There's also old footage shown of some of his concerts. Marvin had some issues. He was a drug addict, he owed the IRS money and he didn't like his dad. He also liked prostitutes because i read a book about him and the book said he used to bring prostitutes to the studio with him.
