Thumbs down Kevin Costner is the Latest Former A-List Star to Go Direct to DVD

Remember Kevin Costner? He of the umpteenth Oscars "Dances with Wolves" scored in 1991, and he of such pricey blockbusters as "Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves", "The Bodyguard" and "Waterworld"? Yeah? Well, some of you do - and I'm guessing, since nobody in Hollywood seems to recall the name, you don't work in the industry?

Seems Costner is going the way of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Uma Thurman (after her latest flop, "Motherhood", anyway) and Wesley Snipes - straight to DVD.

The big guy's "The New Daughter", a thriller about a man's kid going bananas, is directed by Luis Berdejo (screenwriter of ''REC'' and ''Quarantine'') - and quite frankly, it looks like a lot of fun; cliche, sure, but fun none the less. Check out the trailer (below) and read the official synopsis that follows and I think you'll agree it's a pity this has had to be reduced to a premiere in a lounge room.

For single father John James (Kevin Costner), raising his teenage daughter Louisa (Ivana Baquero) and younger son Sam (Gattlin Griffith) would be difficult enough, considering he recently uprooted his family to start a new life in a new town. But he'll soon find his parenting - and survival - skills put to the test when Louisa begins exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. Teaming with multiple Oscar winner Kevin Costner, renowned international filmmaker Luis Berdejo (screenwriter of REC and Quarantine) makes his directorial debut for the Anchor Bay Films' thriller The New Daughter, coming to DVD and Blu-rayTM May 18th from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Yeah, his recent theatrical releases were mostly flops.

He did that one with Ashton Kutcher, The Guardian, which didn't do that great.

Then he was a serial killer in Mr. Brooks which wasn't that great either.

and his recent Swing Vote was a huge dud.

Actors that used to be stars, people can't expect them to make good movies all the time. I liked Mr Brooks movie with Kevin. That was his first time playing a bad guy i think. I don't know why people make such a big deal about straight to video movies. As long as the actors are getting paid for doing them, that's all that matters. People act as if actors that do straight to video movies aren't getting paid. Now if they weren't getting paid, then i would say that's wrong because it's wrong not to pay people for their work. I've seen lots of straight to video movies that are good. I'm sure Cuba Gooding Jr, Wesley Snipes, Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Vivica Fox, Clifton Powell got a lot of money in their bank accounts from doing straight to video movies hahahahahahahahahaha. I'm also sure that they're laughing at people who diss straight to video movies because the bottom line is that they're getting paid while the people who are dissing them don't have a lot of money LOL.

I've never even heard of those movies, but that may say more about me than him.

Cool

I think the last Costner movie I saw in the theater was Dances With Wolves! So I guess I'm in some small way partly to blame for the position he currently finds himself in. Sorry Kevin!

I think the last one I saw was For Love of the Game. Or maybe it was Message in a Bottle. It's been ages.

No, Costner has played bad guy roles before.

One is in the Clint Eastwood directed A Perfect World as an escaped con. My view is that he was more of an anti-hero here.

Another is in No Way Out where he was a spy.

I know of them because I saw them on the video racks when they came out in the video store.

Swing Vote from a couple of years ago disappeared very quickly from the theaters.

I remember when that movie came out and heard a lot of good things about it. I personally never got to see it but maybe I'll check it out one of these days.
