Wow! I didn't know that there was a movie made based on the Are You Being Served? TV Britcom. It would be interesting to read a review of your thoughts on the film!

Grace Brothers department store is being closed for renovations so the staff is sent off on a group holiday to Costa Plonka in Spain. When they arrive at the hotel they find that due to a misunderstanding their rooms wont be available until the next day so they spend the first night in tents next to the hotel patio. (this is reminiscent of they episode where a storm traps the staff in the store overnight and they borrow camping gear from the sporting goods department and camp in the store overnight). The next morning while the staff are enjoying a continental breakfast a revolution breaks out not only trapping them in the hotel but causing them to dodge bullets. In this crises the staff assumes their regular roles with senior staff members barking orders to their juniors as they attempt to communicate to both sides that there is a British tourist party caught in the middle of their war. What makes the series work so well is that there are many different personalities working together in the enclosed envirement of the department store. The writers use a revolution to put these personalities into another enclosed envirement (this time the Hotel) in the movie. This allows the staff to continue with their same relationships (and therefore the same humor) as in the store.

Thank you for the review!!! It's greatly appreciated! The plot of the movie sounds hilarious. They were definitely one of the best groups of British comedy.

I saw this movie on TV about 20 years ago, the station ran it a few times. The first part is very funny, but once they arrive at their destination and the "revolution" starts, the movie totally falls apart.

The movie gets knocked a lot,a lot of the TV scenes were recreated for the film but that was common for movies of a TV series at that time.
I got the DVD of the film free with a newspaper,so I was quite happy. The late Wendy Richard said in her book, the movie could have been handled better and that,it was voted one of the worst film versions of a TV show, ever. |
