Confused Does Anybody Know if Lou And Mary Were Supposed to Be A Love Item?

Just from memory, I recall a lot of innuendos and tension between those two. Does anybody know if the writers wanted them to end up as a couple?

I haven't scene the entire series yet, but I don't think that there were any plans of them being a couple. Maybe close friends, but I can't see them as a couple.

Actually, the 2nd to last episode, "Lou Dates Mary" does address the idea of them being a couple. Mary asks him to dinner at her place, after realizing that he has all the qualities she's looking for in a man. Lou goes, they have a very awkward dinner, kiss once, and realize there's nothing between them. It's one of my favorite episodes, b/c all the awkward nervousness is just ADORABLE. I can't wait till S7 is out so I can see it on DVD!

Thanks for the rundown Kristen! I'd love to see that episode. So I guess Lou was divorced? I thought he was married?

Lou was married at the beginning of the show, but got divorced midway through the show's run. Season 6 began with the remarriage of Lou's ex-wife, Edie.

Regarding Lou/Mary as a potential match, I couldn't buy it. He seemed much more a father figure/mentor to her. Just my opinion!

I seem to recall reading somewhere; back when the show was on that MTM was planning to have Lou & Mary get married in the final episode. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, I've read that too. I'm not sure if it was a serious idea, or just something the producers joked about. But yes, Brian, Lou had been divorced from about Season 4. He dated a few other women before this, but nothing ever turned serious.

I recently saw the pilot episode of "Lou Grant",its starts with Lou arriving in LA,would have nice to have Mary see Lou off at the airport but the only other MTM character to appear in "Lou Grant" was Aunt Flo.(Eileen Heckart)

Lou really evolved from being a sort of angry bear in season1 to a great guy with a heart of gold,he loved Mary almost as a daughter, their romance never even got started in "Lou Dates Mary",its a funny episode.

The part I find very moving in the last episode,is Lou getting Rhoda and Phyllis,to be there for Mary when the newsroom are all fired, apart from Ted of course!

"Lou Dates Mary" is one episode I'm looking forward to seeing again too. As for me, I think I could've seen them eventually getting together, but I'm kind of glad they didn't show that in the show.

I always imagine what would have happened if Mary and Lou had got married in the last episode of MTM then they spunoff "Lou Grant",Mary and Lou would have had to have the quickest divorce in history or they'd have to kill Mary Richards off, which would have been horrible.
Like Valerie Harper in "Valerie"!

Yeah, one of his lady friends was played by Sheree North, who went on to play Babs Kramer (Kramer's mom) on Seinfeld.

I also just saw them with a father/daughter relationship.
But that's just me.

Love the picture, Brian!
