"Monster Squad" Remake Finds Writers, Franchise Potential?!
Platinum Dunes Behind Monster Squad Remake
Source: Shock Till You Drop March 18, 2010 Old news first: It's been over a year since Rob Cohen - out promoting his third Mummy film - revealed that he was actively working with Paramount to remake The Monster Squad. Cohen was a producer on the original directed by Fred Dekker. It's been quiet since then... Now the fresh news: Deadline is reporting that Cohen's efforts live on. And we can confirm Platinum Dunes - Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form - is going to produce! Dunes, as I'm sure you're well aware, produced The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes. This is sure going to ruffle some feathers. A writer is now being sought. We've got a call in to Dunes for more details. The Monster Squad, written by Shane Black and Dekker, was released in '87 and told of a monster-lovin' group of kids who side with the Frankenstein monster and must do battle with Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Gill-Man. http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news...s.php?id=14537 |

The Monster Squad succeeds because of Fred Dekker and Shane Black- Dekker has a great love for the Universal Monsters which shows in his film. Not to mention the fact that the kids were very un-PC if you listen to their dialogue....doubt we'll get that today.

Monster Squad Remake to Use Classic or New Monsters?
Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor April 26, 2010 Platinum Dunes continues is remake rampage across Hollywood, steering away from the slasher fare and latching, this time, onto an '80s genre kid classic: The Monster Squad. Originally directed by Fred Dekker, the update will be produced by the Platinum Dunes team - Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and Michael Bay - as well as Rob Cohen and Paramount Pictures. Shock inquired about the status of the project with Fuller today who told us: "I'm in the process of finding a screenwriter. I'm meeting with writers every day. So we'll get someone in the next two or three weeks and get them writing." The original film resurrected Universal's classic monsters, tapping into a healthy obsession many kids growing up in the '80s had with the creatures. But now faced with a new generation, does Platinum Dunes intend to revive these familiar faces again or can we expect a new line-up of foes? "That's something we're definitely talking to writers about and I don't have an answer for you yet," Fuller said. He maintained, "We're definitely using the original film as a blueprint and love the fun parts of it. We have three or four different takes, some stick closely to the original - others are going to be a bit different. It's about sitting down with Rob Cohen and the studio and figuring out which storyline we're going to go with. But I can tell you all of the story lines, whereas "Friday the 13th" isn't like the original, this will be close to the original. It's about a group of kids who have a monster squad, monsters come to their town and they've got to figure it out." http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news...s.php?id=14975 |

Monster Squad Redo Finds Writers, Franchise Potential?!
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 By: MrDisgusting Even with the remake craze dwindling (thanks to the focus on 3D), Paramount Pictures is still moving forward on Monster Squad tapping screenwriting cousins Mark and Brian Gunn (Journey to the Mysterious Island) for the redo. The studio is looking to the family-oriented property as a potential franchise. http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/20592 |
