Default A message from the creator of 'Better Off Ted' (and how to help this great comedy)

Because people keep sending in queries about "Better Off Ted" -- and because I care too -- I asked ABC about the status of this wonderful comedy.

There are a couple of Season 2 episodes in the can that have not aired yet, and I asked when (if ever) we might see them. "Airdates for those episodes haven’t been assigned yet," an ABC PR rep said Thursday.

So is the show canceled? ABC's response: "No, it's not canceled" but "word of a pick-up for next season likely won’t come till May."

So is "Ted" dead? I sincerely hope not, and just as Lem was optimistic about his ability to rock leather pants, I remain hopeful that "Ted" has a chance to stay alive -- if only a slender chance. Please?!

It must be acknowledge that "Ted's" Season 2 ratings were not good, but when ABC scheduled several episodes to air over the holidays -- with no promotion -- it didn't exactly help matters. And I will try not to read too much into the fact that a "Ted" link has disappeared from the home page of ABC's press site.

I will merely continue to hope that ABC decides to give "Ted" a chance on Wednesdays, when it would make a fine companion for "Modern Family" and the network's other Wednesday comedies. In case you're unclear about the quality of "Better Off Ted," it's is every bit as well-written and addictive as "Modern Family." If you haven't seen that for yourself yet, get caught up on Hulu.

Jay Harrington, one of the comedy's lead actors, will quickly be snapped up by the NBC comedy "Nathan vs. Nurture" if Veridian Dynamics goes away. As EW reported, Harrington has been cast in "Nathan" but in "second position," which means that if "Ted" keeps going, he'll stick with that show and forgo the new role.

And Harrington is certainly devoted to continuing to play Ted, if possible. “I have had many conversations with [creator] Victor Fresco, and we are both extremely hopeful that ABC will give us [another] shot, so we shall see,” Harrington told EW TV critic Ken Tucker.

Fresco himself wanted to thank the fans of the show for sticking by the show and he sent me this message for "Ted heads":

"The cast and writers have always felt and appreciated your support. More importantly, the network knows you're out there. And they don't want to [tick] you off. So writing a polite letter or sending a polite email to our ABC friends is never a bad idea.

"Then when the show returns, the makers of 'Ted' will do something nice for you! What about this: We'll mention each of your names on the show, one or two names per episode, for as long as we're on the air. That could be fun. Or not interesting at all. Or the worst idea ever, resulting in thousands of lawsuits. I'll keep thinking.

"Thanks again for your support so far. It means a lot to us to have such dedicated fans."

If you want to join other fans in trying to save the the show, check out this fan-created Save Better Off Ted site (http://www.savebetteroffted.com/), which has instructions about how to send emails and letters to ABC. There's also a "Ted" petition here(http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/...-off-ted.html).

Finally, "Ted" writer Michael A. Ross had these clues about the last episode of Season 2, which he wrote. Jump off now if you don't want to see some mild spoilers:

"In addition to Portia de Rossi squaring off in a shovel fight with a former Veridian CEO, and Phil and Lem getting a little [tough], Ted and Linda finally... Well, I guess this leads me to what I would ask of anyone who supports our show. Please ask ABC to show the those two episodes!," Ross said in an email.

At the very least, ABC could let "Ted" fans see those two episodes. Somewhere, somehow -- soon.

I'm going to be really sad if ABC officially cancels it. This show is the only thing on that crappy network known as ABC that is worth watching.
