Angry Teacher calls student a "loser" on test paper

http://www.ksfy.com/news/local/87461092.html

By KSFY Staff

Story Created: Mar 12, 2010 at 8:42 AM CST

(Story Updated: Mar 12, 2010 at 8:59 AM CST )

A North Carolina middle school teacher is in the hot seat over his controversial style of teaching.

Rex Roland teaches sixth graders at Enka Middle School in Candler, N.C.
Patty Clement says her child was repeatedly bullied by Roland in class and she wants it to stop.

Clement says on a November vocabulary assignment Roland wrote the word "loser" after correcting the paper.

Just a few weeks ago, another graded assignment made its way home, and at the top of the page was the word "loser" underlined twice.

The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying that this is a personnel matter that's being looked into.

It's important to note that some parents defend Roland's teaching style saying its his way of relating to his students. None would go on camera with us.

On one hand, I can see how this can be infuriating. But on the other, when i was in high school I had a teacher who wrote "epic fail" and "WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THIS CLASS?!" on papers. It was just her personality. And I was never offended or anything.

I'm sure it wasn't a mean gesture. And I'm sure she didn't write that out of hatred for the student, but I'm not going to defend her actions. Somethings are just unprofessional.

How can some parents even think of defending this miserable excuse for
a teacher? I dealt with being bullied by teachers when I was in High School
simply because of my autism. There are just some teachers out there who
should not be teaching, period.

The girl is only in 6th grade!

You pull that crap up north and the parents will have your head.

I would demand that teacher be fired - he did it repeatedly!
It's either ridiculous arrogance or he has a screw loose.
It is demeaning and against the best interest of a child- an authority figure, a teacher is telling her she is a loser?

What is she 11 years old?

You'd have to get a restraining order against me if you did that to my daughter.

Cool

It could be that this is just that teacher's way of motivating his students. I think he could find a more appropriate way of doing it though.

I agree. When I was in first grade, our class was cutting out shapes out of pieces of paper. We were all quiet, concentrating on the task at hand. I cut one of them wrong. Our teacher, who was walking around the room, happened to pass by me at that moment. She yanked a handful of my hair before moving on.

It hurt, but I was more shocked and ashamed than anything else. I didn't make a peep, so none of my classmates noticed. Looking back, I know I didn't do anything wrong - but I never told anyone this until over 20 years later. Not my parents, not the principal - nobody. I clearly thought I was the one in the wrong and thought I would be in trouble if I told.

Keep in mind, this was the mid-80s - if something like that happened today, it would be all over the news like this story is. My 1st grade teacher ended up retiring at the end of that school year (1986-87).

That sounds like the middle school I went to.

Seriously. A bunch of dirtball scum those "teachers" were. There only for the paycheck, I think.

I was not getting crazy and I was not bashing our school systems in general, I
was just saying there are some teachers who should not be teaching.

You're right Courtney. And good for you for wanting to be a teacher. It's a very noble profession.
