Cool

There's only two words you have to say in association with britcoms, 'Absolutely Fabulous'. That show is so funny, if you have'nt seen it, buy the videos off amazon or something. You might be lucky enough to see an episode on Comedy Central. I highly recommend it!

I never cared much for "Absolutley Fabulous", But I did enjoy "Fawlty Towers" and "Father Ted".

In the U.S. you can watch these and many other "Britcoms" on BBC America! I dont think all cable companies carry this channel, but most satelite and Digital Cable carriers do.

Stanley Roper: I'm sorry Jack

Jack Tripper: Oh, thats ok, what did you do?

Roper: Me? Nothing, I just thought I saw something that wasnt normal, because it was normal, but, now I can see it aint normal, so, everything's back to normal again.

Jack: oh, well, I'm glad for you.

Don't forget "Benny Hill!"

Also, while were on the subject, has anyone ever seen any britcom that the U.S. later turned into one of their own? For example:

"'Til Death Us Do Part"->"All in the Family"

"Man About the House"->"Three's Company"

Felix: "Responsibility" is my middle name, Mister!

Oscar: And "Pest" is your FIRST name, Mister!

Keeping Up Appearances is a hoot! Hyacinthe is hysterical in that show. She played a detective on a drama series but I couldn't get into it. I also loved the red-headed actress who played Mrs. Roper in Man about the House.

You've all forgotten Red Dwarf!!! How could you? It's the best and not too mention one of the highest rating shows in BBC history. It's unique as a sci-fi comedy and KILLS anything the americans could do in that genre (eg Third Rock from the Sun). In fact, most british sitcoms beat ANY American sitcom. American sitcoms are basically all the same. Pretty much all revolve around the home or office. British sitcoms often have a little more intelligence with their comedy (eg Mr Bean, The Young Ones) and don't just throw out the same old lines and always do the same boring things. The british ones are innovative, cutting edge and their gags are often GENUINE gags not some Frasier smart ass remark or Bill Cosby and his wife are finally alone or some rubbish. Watch more BBC TV and request your local stations to bring back Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, Blackadder, Mr Bean etc if they don't run it!

While I love Britcoms, I don't think "they kill" American sitcoms. I happen to love the good old American sitcom, and think that while lots of American shows are stupid, and contrived, there are lots of them that are really funny, and well done. I have seen many Britcoms that I didn't like as well, besides the fact that American censors wouldn't allow a lot of what goes on British TV. There is definately a different mind set in Britain.
