Rolleyes Ex-Browns QB Derek Anderson: Cleveland 'fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner'

Former Browns QB Derek Anderson excoriated the fans of the city of Cleveland on Tuesday, the same day the team released him.

In an e-mail to the News-Herald of northern Ohio, Anderson said:

"The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner. I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured.

"I know at times I wasn't great. I hope and pray I'm playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them."

Anderson was cut after four years in Cleveland that included a Pro Bowl appearance in 2007. But his final two seasons there were lackluster, and included Cleveland fans cheering when Anderson suffered a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 30, 2008.

Coach Eric Mangini offered warm words for Anderson in a statement on Monday. But Anderson, who said he didn't expect the Browns to bring him back, said the team did not speak with him:

"I never heard from anyone until today," Anderson told the News-Herald. "Nobody ever tried to reach out to me, which is fine." -- Sean Leahy

Former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson apologizes for remarks about Cleveland fans

By Associated Press
11:24 AM EST, March 10, 2010

CLEVELAND (AP) — Former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson has apologized after saying Cleveland fans "don't deserve a winner" following his release.

Anderson was let go by the club on Tuesday, ending an uneven five-year stint with the Browns. In an e-mail to The (Willoughby) News-Herald after his release, Anderson wrote that he will never forget Browns fans cheering when he was injured on the field. He called them "ruthless" and said he hopes when he comes back to Cleveland with another team that "we roll them."

On Wednesday, Anderson said he regretted some of the things he said. He said his remarks were out of character and that he had some great times playing in Cleveland, "especially during the 2007 season."

Anderson made the Pro Bowl in '07, but had two sub-par seasons after that.

Cool

If any one of us had just been fired from our job we wouldn't be in a good mood either. And we probably wouldn't have anythiong nice to say about our ex employer if a reporter stuck a microphone in our face and started asking us questions either. I think it's important when we read these kind of comments in the media to remember the context in which they were given. I note that given time to cool off and to absorb what had happened to him Mr. Anderson did apologize for his original remarks and express his regret .

That's messed up the Browns fans cheered when he got hurt. Nobody deserves that. I guess i can sympathize with the Browns fans because they've been loyal for a long time and they keep getting disappointed every year. So i can see why they're glad he's gone. But i can't put all the blame on him because he wasn't the only player on the team. Every Browns player should take the blame for the constant losing.
