During the 1956-'57 season, Carol Burnett played Buddy Hackett's girl friend
on the short-lived sitcom, Stanley before graduating first to a regular
spot on Garry Moore's variety show and finally to helming her own popular
variety series (in the '70s).

John Forsythe went from sitcoms like Bachelor Father and To Rome
with Love
to the popular
nighttime soap Dynasty.

Andy Griffith was Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show and,
many years later, lawyer Ben Matlock.

Dick Van Dyke went from the role of Rob Petrie, on The Dick Van Dyke
Show
, to the starring role of Dr. Mark Sloan on Diagnosis Murder.

Buddy Ebsen was Jed Clampett, on The Beverly Hillbillies, and later
detective Barnaby Jones.

Sally Field began on sitcoms Gidget and The Flying Nun, before
becoming an Oscar-winning actress for the movie "Norma Rae."

Larry Hagman was Major Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie, before he
took on the role of J.R. Ewing on the nighttime soap Dallas.

Bill Bixby starred in the sitcoms My Favorite Martian and The Courtship of Eddie's Father, before going on to dramatic roles on The
Magician
and The Incredible Hulk.

Carroll O'Connor went from the sitcom role Archie Bunker on All in the
Family
to the starring role on the crime drama In the Heat of the Night.

After Barney Miller ended, Hal Linden starred in two dramatic series,
Blacke's Magic and Jack's Place.

After One Day at a Time ended its run, Valerie Bertinelli starred in a
number of made-for-TV movies (virtually all of which were dramas).

And, of course, movie stars Robin Williams and Tom Hanks both got their
starts on TV sitcoms (Mork and Mindy and Bosom Buddies,
respectively.

Tom Hanks starred for two seasons in Bosom Buddies before becoming a major movie star..
