And people laugh at Beaver Cleaver for being afraid of the library police.

Honestly sometimes the Library system can be dysfunctional. I accidentally lost a DVD and so of course I went to the Library to replace it. When I asked how much it would cost they said their list price which was $29.99. When I went to a store nearby I found a brand new copy of the DVD for $11 but they told me I couldn't just replace it - I had to pay the $30. Well in this economy, besides from a pt. of logic, this was so nutty I called my local councilperson and complained - my CM - who is just great -intervened and the Library (finally) let me replace the used video with the brand new unopened one.

That's pretty extreme for an overdue DVD. I hope the arrest gets off the kid's record. When I was in high school the librarian in my high school was horrible. She would make bitchy comments if a book was overdue one day.

Instead of arresting kids who have overdue books, how about going after the real trouble teenagers who are commiting crimes.

Man it's tough enough to get kids to go to the library these days. Do they have to scare them off like this? And like Mickey said there are better things for the people involved to do with their time and resources.

I did not read the article fully until recently, but the arrest warrant was actually for failure to appear. It seems he was fined for the overdue DVD and did not appear in court like he was supposed to, so a warrant was issued for his arrest. If he had just appeared in court to pay his fine, there would not have been a warrant issued for his arrest and everything would have been fine. I am still glad the law got changed, but it was still his fault he got arrested. I have removed my previous comments because I made them without knowing the whole story.
