Thumbs up Movie Reviews: "Brooklyn's Finest"

Movie Reviews: Brooklyn’s Finest

Most studios have decided to give Alice a wide berth, assuming that it would be futile to challenge it this weekend.

The sole exception is Overture Films' cop drama Brooklyn's Finest, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes, which is opening in fewer than 2,000 theaters.

"These are fine actors," Roger Ebert writes about the stars, who play cops acting outside the law. "The milieu involves a tough, poker-playing, substance-abusing, hard-bitten world where the law meets crime, and the two sides have more in common with each other than with civilians."

But he is turned off by "the level of the violence and killing" in which "the gun becomes the instrument of merciless self-will."

John Anderson in the Washington Post says that ticket buyers are likely to be put off by "what is not just a relentlessly violent but a relentlessly grim drama."

Linda Barnard in the Toronto Star observes: "Violent and almost cartoonish in its use of blood, Brooklyn's Finest underwent some editing since its premiere at Sundance a year ago, most notably a change to the ending. What's missing is a sense of purpose and a satisfying story."

On the other hand, Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News comments that the film "has an unexpectedly epic emotional sweep and a trio of great performances to anchor it."

A.O. Scott in the New York Times also praises the performances. "Particular scenes are not always entirely credible," he writes "but the sheer charismatic force of much of the acting keeps you in the movie."

Likewise Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer remarks that the three stars "are all very good, even if the guys they're playing are, if not bad, then tragically corrupt, or corrupted."

I could care less what the critics have to say about it because i'm gonna see it anyway LOL. Most white movie critics love corny movies and i notice that they always diss action and drama movies like Brooklyn's Finest.

I'm gonna see this next weekend. Wesley Snipes is good at playing a bad guy. JamesG, did you see him in Chaos movie with Jason Statham? He was a bad guy in that. That's a good flick.

No I haven't seen that. There's a lot of flicks I have to get around to watching.

I do like Jason Statham.

I liked Brooklyn's Finest, great cop drama.

I probably liked it more since it was a "local movie" and I knew most of the shooting locations.

JamesG, are you white or black? If you're white, i'm surprised you live in Brooklyn because i bet there aren't that many whites in Brooklyn LOL. I saw Brooklyn's Finest yesterday and i liked it too. I was surprised that Wesley and Don got killed. I was also surprised to see Ellen Barkin in this. I haven't seen her since Spike Lee's wack movie She Hate Me. JamesG, you should see this Mercy movie she did with hot Peta Wilson who used to play on Le Femme Nikita tv show. Peta tried to eat her pus*y in one scene hahahahahahaha. They also kissed. Mercy has a lot of sex especially rough sex LOL. The movie is about lesbians and Ellen is a cop investigating a lesbian that got killed. Peta is a suspect. That hispanic girl that was a hooker that Richard Gere had sex with in Brooklyn's Finest is cute. LOL@scene when she sprayed her pus*y with some perfume after she had sex with a cop when Richard walked in on them hahahahahahahahaha. I wonder why she told Richard to leave her apartment when he said he wanted her to get away with him and leave Brooklyn. She really had him sprung because he told her he loved her LOL. LOL@Ethan Hawke stealing money from drug dealers he killed hahahahahaha. He almost got away with it.

That sucks that police don't get paid that much money especially since their job is dangerous and they try to protect good people from getting hurt from bad people. I know there are some bad cops but there's also some good cops. I get tired of ignorant black men dissing the cops and always thinking that the cops pick on them for no reason. If their dumb asses wasn't always hanging in front of a store, robbing, dealing drugs, then the cops wouldn't mess with them.

I'm white. The area I'm in is mostly Asian now; used to be majority Italian but over the years they moved to Staten Island and New Jersey.

A lot of Chinese moved out of Hong Kong when China took it back in 1997.

Some of the areas used for Brooklyn's Finest was filmed in Brighton Beach which is majority Russian. You will find that Brooklyn has many areas that are majority one nationality.

The actress who played Richard Gere's prostitute is Shannon Kane who is currently on the soap All My Children.

Ethan Hawke is awesome. I knew he wasn't going to succeed with his plan, not in a movie like this.

Don Cheadle was also excellent, esp. in the scenes when he is going crazy.

Haven't seen the film Mercy.

JamesG, you should see the hate that Brooklyn's Finest is getting at rap group Wu Tang Clan's website wutang-corp.com. I posted a topic about it and most of the people who responded said they didn't like the movie. Me and another guy are the only ones who like it.

Yeah, I checked it out. People there seemed to hate Richard Gere, say Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes were too old for this, and calling it a wanna-be Training Day.

Whatever, I liked it.

I didn't know you check out Wu Tang's website sometimes. Do you post on there? If you do, what's your name? My name on there is CharlesJones. I laughed at this one guy's comments about Richard Gere saying that he sucks playing a cop. I told the guy that Richard has played a cop before a few times because he was a dirty cop in Internal Affairs with Andy Garcia and he was a good cop in No Mercy with Kim Basinger. I liked his characters in those movies. His character was acting kinda weird in Brooklyn's Finest. I didn't like how he acted in that scene when he told his new partner to roll up his car window when he wanted to roll it down. His other new partner that got killed, Richard didn't want him to do anything to that guy that was arguing with his woman and putting his hands on her. That guy that was his partner that got killed, he plays on new tv show Dark Blue with Dylan McDermott.
