I have a lot but I'd have to say the Cosby Show. It always changed and was great mostly every time.

Hmmm....the animated series "The Beatles" used "Can't Buy Me Love" as its theme song, but perhaps that's cheating.
This was a mega-hit long before the series appeared. And it wasn't written just for the series. This is lucky for the competition. Had The Beatles written a theme song just for the series they would be the clear winners.

Among sitcoms, I gotta go with The Beverly Hillbillies. When this show came on in 1962, no one had ever heard a finger-picked five-string banjo before. The theme song got radio play. It was released as a single and charted.

But my favorite theme song is:
***drum roll****

Secret Agent by Johnny Rivers!

There's a man who leads a life of danger
To everyone he meets, he stays a stranger
With every move he makes, another chance he takes
Odds are he won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name

Beware of pretty faces that you find
A pretty face can hide an evil mind
Ah, be careful what you say, you'll give yourself away
Odds are you won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name
(totally cool Johnny Rivers guitar solo)

Swinging on the Riviera one day
And then laying in the Bombay on the next day
Ah, if you let the wrong word slip, while kissing persuasive lips
The odds are you won't live to see tomorrow

Secret agent man, secret agent man
They've given you a number and taken 'way your name
Secret Agent Man....

Although I love Laverne & Shirley more than anything on earth, it didn't exactly have the best theme song. I liked the theme songs from Gilligan's Island, Happy Days (Every single version, including Rock Around the Clock), Mary Tyler Moore, All in the Family, WKRP in Cincinnati, Facts of Life, and I like the tune to Hawaii Five-O, but I've never even seen the show... (By the way, these songs aren't in the order I like them)

------------------
"Well, Laverne is sort of childish"

"Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!"

"Well at least I don't sew L's on everything I wear!"

"Well that would be pretty stupid considering your name's Shirley!"

All in the family? Are you joking L&S? I usually agree with you but on this one I have to gasp! Sorry but I think it's really dumb!

How about 'The Rockford Files'? Or 'Battlestar Galactica' (Stu Phillips and the Los Angeles Philaharmonic Orchestra)? As for newer shows - that Drew Carrey theme seems pretty cool. Ooh, I forgot, 'Hill Street Blues'. Now that one's and AWESOME theme-song. And then you got 'Cheers'. Man! The list just goes on-and-on! Okay, now I'll stop (lol).

Oops, sorry, T, I meant to say that I don't like the song so much as the way they sing it. It's hilarious...

At least three of my favorite TV theme songs are from animated shows. In no particular order;

1)The Theme from ALF(Not the sitcom, but the two cartoon spin-offs).
2)"You're Standing on My Neck"(Theme from "Daria"), by Splendora.
3)"Turn Down the Sun"(Theme from "Daria: Is It Fall Yet?"), also by Splendora.

And one of my favorite movie themes is "Opening Day"(Theme from "Up the Down Staircase"), by Fred Karlin.

Well, to paraphrase one of our classic statesmen, my previous answer is no longer operative.

Last night I was watching the Addams Family and I realized how much I loved that theme song. I actually programmed by setup to replay just the theme song and watched it for 10 minutes or so. It is a classic. And, for now anyway, it is my favorite among sitcoms.

Also, when you asked about "song", I though that meant there had to be some lyrics. If all music is fair game, "The Prisoner" wins overall.

I hope you read this post quickly though, I can be rather fickle about favorites...
