If you can't imagine John Lennon wanting to be in a car commercial, you're not alone. But you're also out of luck -- Lennon not only appears, posthumously of course, in a current commercial for French automobile maker Citroen, but the clip actually connects footage of him talking about creative invention to images of Citroen's luxury DS3 model. As always, outraged fans blamed Yoko Ono.
On Tuesday, Lennon's son, Sean Lennon, defended his mom while respecting his dad. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "She did not do it for money. Has to do w hoping to keep dad in public consciousness. No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young." A valid point, to be sure, but the commercial is still, perhaps, a little unsettling to Beatles fans who consider things like high-end automobile endorsements undermining Lennon's true legacy as an artist, as well as his integrity as a public figure. Click here to view a YouTube of the actual commercial. "Having just seen the ad I realize why people are mad," Sean followed up, on Twitter. "But intention was not financial, was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world." In the clip, Lennon is seen discussing why we shouldn't look to the past for inspiration. "Once a thing's been done, it's been done," he says. "So why all this nostalgia?" Oh, don't let the irony get past you. http://www.spinner.com/2010/03/03/sean-lennon-yoko-ono/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ph4rZU0Ns4 |

I do not know of any kid out there, no matter what age, who does not know who John Lennon was or why he was important. You don't need these stupid commercials and the like pimping out his image and lyrics, his music is everywhere. It just cheapens what The Beatles and John Lennon were about.
Something that was intended to be taken a little more seriously than all this current dreck. But then, consider all the Beatles merch back in the mid-60's. Even then, they weren't so above that. From Beatlemania to all the Apple output, it just means that the "anti-materialistic" 60's were just as crass, greedy, and opportunistic as anyone else. |
